Freddie James (born 1937) is a famous former American football coach. He played college football in the late 1950s. He played for Prairie View A&M University under coach Billy Nicks. After college, he worked in a steel plant and as a physical therapist.

His former coach, Billy Nicks, later suggested he become a high school football coach. In 1982, James became the head coach at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas. In his very first year, his team, the Carter Cowboys, reached the 5A state semifinals.

Coaching Success at Carter High

Freddie James led the Carter Cowboys to many victories. In 1988, his team had an amazing season. They won the state championship title. However, this title was later taken away. This happened because of issues with a player's eligibility. The player did not meet all the rules to play.

In 1989, the team was not allowed to compete in the state playoffs. This was because a player on the team did not meet all the requirements. But the Carter Cowboys bounced back quickly. In 1990, they reached the state semifinals again.

Freddie James retired after the 1995 season. During his 14 years at Carter High, his team had an impressive record. They won 123 games, lost 22, and tied 3. He helped make the Carter Cowboys a well-known football team across the country. His total coaching record was 147 wins, 28 losses, and 4 ties.

Recognition and Portrayals

Freddie James has received special honors for his work. In 1996, he was part of the first group of people inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame. This is a big honor for athletes and coaches.

His story has also been shared in movies. In the 2004 film Friday Night Lights, actor Julius Tennon played him. Another movie, Carter High, was released in 2015. This film focused on the Carter team's 1988 season. In Carter High, Freddie James was played by actor Charles S. Dutton.
