Frederic Crowninshield (1845–1918) was an American artist and writer. He was known for his paintings, especially murals, and his beautiful stained-glass designs. He also wrote several books.

About Frederic Crowninshield

Frederic Crowninshield was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 27, 1845. His family was well-known. His parents were Edward Augustus Crowninshield and Caroline Maria Welch. He had two older brothers. One brother, Francis, sadly died from injuries during the American Civil War.

Frederic went to Harvard College and graduated in 1866. After college, he spent 11 years studying art in Europe. He learned from famous artists like Thomas Leeson Rowbotham in London, Thomas Couture in Italy, and Alexandre Cabanel in Paris.

When he returned to America, Frederic taught art. From 1879 to 1885, he taught at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. This school was located in the basement of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at Copley Square.

Later, Crowninshield moved to New York. There, he became the first president of the National Society of Mural Painters. He held this important position from 1895 to 1899. He also led the Fine Arts Federation from 1900 to 1909. In 1911, he was chosen to be the director of the American Academy in Rome in Rome.

One of his most famous artworks is a stained-glass window. It shows a scene from John Bunyan's book, The Pilgrim's Progress. The window is called "Emmanuel's Land" and is at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Boston. Frederic designed this window in 1899. He dedicated it to his mother.

On October 24, 1867, Frederic married Helen Suzette Fairbanks. They had three children together. Their daughter, Helen Suzette, was born in Paris in 1868. Their son, Edward Augustus, was born in Rome in 1870. Their youngest son, Francis Welch Crowninshield, known as "Frank," was born in 1872.

Frederic Crowninshield passed away on September 13, 1918, in Capri, Italy.
