Benjamin Frederik David Philips (born in Zaltbommel, Netherlands, on December 1, 1830 – died June 12, 1900) was an important Dutch-Jewish businessman and banker. He worked with his son, Gerard Philips, to start the famous company now known as Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.. He was also a cousin of Karl Marx through his mother's side of the family.

Who Was Frederik Philips?

Frederik Philips was born in 1830. He was the fourth son of Lion Philips, who belonged to the well-known Philips family. His mother was Sophie Pressburg. At that time, his family earned money from selling tobacco. Later, they changed their religion from Judaism to Calvinism.

Family Life

Frederik married Maria Elizabeth Heijligers. She was a Dutch woman born in Batavia, which is now called Jakarta. Batavia used to be a Dutch colony. Frederik and Maria had nine children together. They had two daughters and seven sons, including Gerard and Anton Philips.

Building Philips

From 1891 to 1898, Frederik Philips was in charge of Philips & Co. He helped the company by providing money, acting as a moneylender. In 1898, his son Gerard was promoted. He became a co-partner in the business. Frederik Philips passed away in 1900 in his hometown of Zaltbommel. He was 69 years old.
