When Was Zaltbommel First Mentioned?
The town of Zaltbommel was first written about in the year 850. Back then, it was called "Bomela."
How Zaltbommel Became a City
Zaltbommel was given special "city rights" in 1231. These rights were updated in 1316. City rights meant the town had more freedom to govern itself.
Zaltbommel During the Eighty Years' War
In 1599, during the Eighty Years War, Spanish forces tried to take Zaltbommel. This event is known as the Siege of Zaltbommel. However, an army from England and the Netherlands, led by Maurice of Orange, helped save the city.
Zaltbommel Today: A Bigger Municipality
Zaltbommel grew to its current size on January 1, 1999. This happened when it joined with the nearby areas of Brakel and Kerkwijk. The municipality is easy to reach. It is close to the A2 Motorway and a railway line. It is also near the Waal and Maas rivers.
