Free Soil is a small village located in Mason County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2020, about 158 people lived there. It's part of Free Soil Township.

History of Free Soil
The village of Free Soil has an interesting past. The current village is actually the second place in Mason County to be called Free Soil. There are still a few homes in an area known as "Old Freesoil."
A railroad line reached Free Soil around 1882. The village officially became an incorporated village in 1912. The community got its name from the Free Soil Party, which was a political group in the past.
Geography and Location
Free Soil is located in the northern part of Mason County. It is about 15 miles northeast of Ludington, which is the main city of the county. It's also about 13 miles southeast of Manistee.
The village covers a total area of about 1.04 square miles, and all of it is land. The village is near where Free Soil Road and Custer Road meet. The Big Sable River flows just north of the village limits.

How Many People Live Here?
According to the 2010 census, there were 144 people living in Free Soil. These people lived in 64 different homes. About 41 of these homes were families.

Education in Free Soil
Free Soil used to have its own school district. It had two buildings that taught students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The high school closed in 2007, and the elementary school closed in 2011. The school had been open since 1913.
