Freedom! is an exciting computer game made by the MECC in 1992. It's an educational game that lets you experience a tough time in American history. You play as a person trying to escape slavery before the American Civil War. Your goal is to travel North to freedom using the secret network called the Underground Railroad. This game was one of the first video games to talk about the topic of slavery.
The game was designed for schools to help students learn about this period. However, some parents had concerns about how the game showed certain parts of history. Because of these concerns, MECC decided to stop selling the game.
How to Play Freedom!
Your Character's Journey
When you start Freedom!, you pick if you want to play as a boy or a girl. Each time you play, your character gets different skills. For example, you might be good at reading or swimming. These skills change how you play the game.
If your character cannot read, written messages in the game will look like strange symbols. Being able to read helps you in different ways. For example, early in the game, your character might get a special pass from their slavemaster. This pass could help them escape to the North. If you don't get a pass, and your character can read and write, you might even be able to create your own pass!
Exploring the World
Freedom! was one of the first educational games to have an "open world." This means you can explore different areas freely. The game simulates real places like Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. As you travel, you can use the stars, moss on trees, or a compass to find your way.
During your journey, you will experience many random events. You might meet slavecatchers who try to find you with dogs. You might also meet helpful people from the Underground Railroad. These people can give you food and a safe place to stay.
