Early Life and Military Service

Freeman Lindsay was born on February 19, 1837, in a town called North Hudson, New York. When the American Civil War began, he joined the Union Army to help his country. He became an officer in the 118th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment.

During the war, Lindsay took part in several important battles. These included the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, the Battle of Chaffin's Farm, and the long Siege of Petersburg. After the war ended, he moved to Neillsville, Wisconsin, where he made his new home.

Public Service and Politics

Freeman Lindsay was also active in public service and politics. From 1871 to 1873, he served as the Sheriff of Clark County, Wisconsin. A sheriff is a top law enforcement officer in a county.

Later, in 1877, Lindsay became a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is where elected officials meet to create and vote on laws for the state of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Republican Party.
