The area of North Hudson was first settled around the year 1800. The very first pioneers chose to build their homes in the southeastern part of the town.
How North Hudson Began
The town of North Hudson was officially formed in 1848. It was created from a part of the nearby town of Moriah. In the early days, a big industry here was tanning. This is a process that turns animal hides into leather. It used a lot of hemlock bark from the local forests. Later, people harvested trees for wood pulp, which is used to make paper.
Frontier Town and Tourism
By the late 1800s, tourism started to become important. Places like Underwood and Elk Lake became popular spots for visitors. A well-known theme park called Frontier Town opened here in 1952. It was a "Wild West" themed attraction for families.
Frontier Town closed in 1998, which had a big impact on the town's economy. However, in 2018, Frontier Town reopened as an Adirondack campground and a place for day trips.
