Freirina is a town and a "commune" in Chile, a country in South America. It is located in the Atacama Region, which is famous for its very dry desert. Freirina is part of the Huasco Province. A commune is like a local area or district that includes a main town and the surrounding countryside.

People and Population
To understand how many people live in Freirina, a special count called a census is done. The last big census in 2002 showed that 5,666 people lived here.
Where People Live
Most people in Freirina, about 61.2% (3,469 people), lived in the main town area. The rest, about 38.8% (2,107 people), lived in the countryside areas around the town.
Population Changes
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Freirina grew. The population increased by 8.5%, which means 445 more people moved to or were born in the commune during those ten years.
How Freirina is Governed
Freirina is managed by a local government called a municipality. This municipality is led by an "alcalde" (which is like a mayor) and a group of people called a municipal council.

The alcalde is chosen directly by the people of Freirina in an election that happens every four years. The alcalde from 2008 to 2012 was Roberto Bruzzone Galeb. The municipal council members also help make decisions for the commune.
