Fremont Street is a very famous street in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. It's the second most well-known street in the Las Vegas area, right after the Las Vegas Strip. The street is named after John C. Frémont, who was an explorer and a politician.

Fremont Street is in the middle of the Downtown casino area. Many famous casinos have been located here, like Binion's Horseshoe, Fremont Hotel and Casino, Golden Nugget, Four Queens, and the Pioneer Club. The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is also here and is the longest-running casino in Las Vegas.

Before the Fremont Street Experience was built, the western part of Fremont Street was often shown in movies and TV shows. It was famous for its bright lights and many neon signs, like the cowboy sign called Vegas Vic. Because of all these dazzling lights, people called the street "Glitter Gulch."

Fremont Street runs from Main Street to Sahara Avenue. Car traffic actually starts at Las Vegas Boulevard. When it reaches Sahara Avenue, it leaves Las Vegas and becomes Boulder Highway. In the past, important national highways like U.S. Route 93 and U.S. Route 95 used to run along Fremont Street. Now, these highways use Interstate 515 (which is now Interstate 11). The part of Fremont Street east of the Fremont East District is currently known as Nevada State Route 582.

Fremont Street's History

Fremont Street has been around since 1905, which is when Las Vegas itself was founded. It was the first street in Las Vegas to be paved, in 1925. In 1931, it also got the city's very first traffic light.

Before the big interstate highways were built, Fremont Street was part of major routes like U.S. Route 93 and U.S. Route 95.

Even though gambling was happening before it was officially allowed, the Northern Club on Fremont Street was one of the first places to get a gambling license in Nevada in 1931.

In September 1994, the "Glitter Gulch" part of Fremont Street was closed to cars. This was so construction could begin on the exciting Fremont Street Experience.

In 2002, the city of Las Vegas created the Fremont East Entertainment District (FEED). This is a special area in downtown Las Vegas for fun and entertainment. In 2004, the city decided to improve a three-block part of Fremont Street, just east of the Fremont Street Experience. They wanted to make it an arts and entertainment spot within FEED.

This improvement project cost $5.5 million. It was a team effort between the city and private businesses. The goal was to make downtown more exciting with a compact area of bars and clubs.

The three-block renovation made the streets more friendly for people walking. It added new plants and cool, retro-looking neon signs. They even put up four new vintage-style Las Vegas neon signs in the middle of the street. These improvements for Fremont East officially opened in the summer of 2007.

Today, the Fremont East Entertainment District covers six blocks. It stretches from Las Vegas Boulevard East to 8th Street, and from Ogden Street South to Carson. The historic El Cortez hotel and casino is located within this district.
