Friedrich Zimmermann (born 18 July 1925 – died 16 September 2012) was an important German politician. He was a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU) party. From 1982 to 1989, he served as Germany's top official for internal affairs. Later, from 1989 to 1991, he was in charge of transportation for the country.
Life and Political Journey
Friedrich Zimmermann was born on 18 July 1925. He served in the Second World War from 1943 to 1945. He was a lieutenant in the military. After the war, in 1946, he studied law and economics in Munich. He earned a special degree called a PhD. From 1951 to 1954, he worked for the government in Bavaria. He also became a lawyer in 1963.
Zimmermann joined the CSU party in 1948. In 1955, he became a main organizer for the CSU. From 1956 to 1963, he held the important role of General Secretary for the party. During this time, there was a public discussion about a casino event in Bavaria. This led to him getting the nickname "Old Schwurhand." This nickname stayed with him for many years.
From 1963 to 1967, Zimmermann managed the money for the CSU party in Bavaria. He was also a deputy leader of the CSU from 1979 to 1989. He was a member of the German parliament for a long time, from 1957 to 1990. He was directly elected from the Landshut area. He was very popular, always winning more than 57% of the votes.
In October 1982, Zimmermann became the Minister of Interior. This meant he was responsible for Germany's internal security. He served in this role under Chancellor Helmut Kohl. In 1989, there was a change in government ministers. On 21 April 1989, he became the Minister for Transport. In this job, he was in charge of things like roads and railways. After the elections in 1990, he left the government on 18 January 1991.
Personal Life and Passing
Friedrich Zimmermann was a Catholic. He had two children. He passed away on 16 September 2012.
