Early Life and Musical Start
Fritz came from a family who loved music. His mother played the violin, and his father was a choir-master. Life was not easy for his family, especially after Fritz's father died when Fritz was only five years old.
When he was a young man, Wunderlich worked in a bakery. People heard him singing while he worked and were very impressed. They encouraged him to study music. He even received a scholarship to study at the Freiburg College of Music. There, he studied the French horn and, most importantly, singing.
Becoming a Famous Singer
Fritz Wunderlich quickly became known as a brilliant young tenor. He sang many roles in Mozart's operas. Over time, he learned parts in many other famous operas. These included Verdi's Rigoletto and Don Carlo.
One of his most famous recordings is Mozart's Magic Flute. In this recording, Wunderlich sings the part of Prince Tamino. The famous baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sings the part of Papageno, the birdcatcher.
Singing German Lieder
Wunderlich had a beautiful, clear voice. This made his voice perfect for singing German Lieder. Lieder are special German art songs, often about love or nature. He sang the great songs by composers like Schubert and Schumann. His performance of Schumann's Dichterliebe song cycle is especially well-known.
A Tragic End
Fritz Wunderlich was becoming famous all over the world. Sadly, his life was cut short by an accident. He fell down the stairs at a friend's hunting house. He died just before his 36th birthday.
