The Story of Funky Monkey
A Spy and a Chimp on the Run
The movie begins with Alec McCall, played by Matthew Modine. He is a spy who works with a clever chimpanzee named Clements. Alec's boss, Flick, turns out to be a villain. Flick wants to do harmful experiments on Clements. His plan is to create chimp soldiers to sell to the highest bidder.
Alec decides to protect Clements. He takes the chimp and runs away to his old hometown. There, they meet a very smart boy named Michael, played by Seth Adkins.
Michael's Football Challenge
Michael wants to impress a girl he likes. To do this, he tries to join the school football team. The coach, played by Jeffrey Tambor, agrees to let Michael play. But there's a condition: Michael must tutor the team's star players. These players are close to being kicked off the team because of their bad grades.
Meanwhile, Flick sends his helpers to find Clements. Michael's mom, Megan, is a computer programmer. She is a single mom and rents a room to Alec McCall. She doesn't know about Clements, but Michael does.
The Final Showdown
Flick's helpers fail to catch the chimp. So, Flick decides to go after Clements himself. He breaks into Michael's house and uses gas to knock out Clements and Michael. Flick takes them to his secret headquarters. There, a doctor, played by Gilbert Gottfried, is ready to start the experiments.
Alec McCall quickly rescues Michael and Clements. They rush back to the town for the big Homecoming football game. Soon, the bad guys show up at the game. They dress up as football players to try and catch Clements during the game. Clements and Alec join Michael's team to stop Flick from winning.
In the end, Michael helps his team win the game. Flick and his henchmen are arrested for being cruel to animals. Michael gets the girl he likes, and Alec and Megan become a couple.
