The Furness Hoard is a special collection of Viking silver coins and other cool items. These treasures are from the 800s and 900s! Someone found them in May 2011 in a place called Furness, which is in Cumbria, England. A person using a metal detector found it, but we don't know who they are or exactly where they found it.

What's in the Hoard?

This amazing hoard has 92 silver coins! Among them are two special coins called dirhams, which came all the way from Arabic lands. The hoard also includes several silver bars, known as ingots, and a beautiful silver bracelet. Experts believe these treasures were buried around the year 955 AD.

Why is This Hoard Important?

The Furness Hoard is the biggest collection of Viking treasures ever found in the Furness area. It's like a "missing link" in history! For a long time, people knew that Vikings were active in the British Isles. Many local place names in Furness, like Barrow, Yarlside, Roa Island, and Ormsgill, come from the Old Norse language that Vikings spoke. But before this hoard was found, there wasn't much archaeological proof that Vikings actually lived there. This hoard finally gives us strong evidence of Norse people settling and living in the area.

Where Can You See It?

Since it was found, the Furness Hoard has been kept safe at the Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness. The museum hopes to officially own the hoard after it has been valued. This means it might become a permanent display for everyone to enjoy and learn from!
