Günter Bernard, born on November 4, 1939, is a German former professional footballer. He was a talented goalkeeper. His father, Robert Bernard, was also a famous German international football player.
Günter Bernard's Club Career
Starting with Schweinfurt 05
Günter Bernard was born in Schweinfurt, Germany. He began his football journey with his hometown team, Schweinfurt 05. From 1958, he played in the top league called the Oberliga Süd.
Moving to Werder Bremen
In 1963, Günter joined Werder Bremen. This was the same year the Bundesliga was created. He stayed with Bremen until he retired from playing in 1974.
Bundesliga Success
Bernard was the main goalkeeper for Werder Bremen when they surprisingly won the Bundesliga title in 1965. He played a total of 287 matches for the North German club in the Bundesliga.
Playing for West Germany
Early International Calls
Günter Bernard's journey with the West Germany national team began in 1961. He was first called up for the youth team. A year later, in 1962, he was invited to play for the senior team.
Competing for the Goalkeeper Spot
At that time, Günter faced strong competition from other talented goalkeepers. These included Wolfgang Fahrian and Hans Tilkowski. Bernard made his first appearance for West Germany on October 24, 1962. He was still playing for 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 then.
The 1966 FIFA World Cup
Winning the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen in 1965 helped him earn a spot. He was chosen for the West Germany squad for the 1966 FIFA World Cup. However, Hans Tilkowski was the main goalkeeper for West Germany at that tournament.
Final International Game
Bernard played his fifth and final game for West Germany in 1968. He came on as a substitute for Horst Wolter in a match against Wales.
