Günter Bernard, born on November 4, 1939, is a former German professional football player. He was a goalkeeper, which is the player who tries to stop the ball from going into the goal. His father, Robert Bernard, was also a famous German football player.

Günter's Club Career

Günter Bernard was born in Schweinfurt, Germany. He started playing for his hometown club, 1. FC Schweinfurt 05, in 1958. He played in the top league called the Oberliga Süd.

In 1963, he joined SV Werder Bremen. This was when the new German football league, the Bundesliga, was just starting. Günter stayed with Werder Bremen until he stopped playing football in 1974.

He was a very important player for Werder Bremen. In 1965, his team surprisingly won the Bundesliga championship! He played 287 games in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen.

Playing for His Country

Günter Bernard also played for the West Germany national team. He first played for the youth team in 1961. A year later, he was called up to the senior team.

At that time, there were other great goalkeepers like Wolfgang Fahrian and Hans Tilkowski. Günter played his first game for West Germany on October 24, 1962.

Winning the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen in 1965 helped him get a spot in the squad for the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England. However, Hans Tilkowski was chosen as the main goalkeeper for that tournament. West Germany finished as runners-up in the World Cup that year.

Günter played his fifth and final game for West Germany in 1968. He came on as a substitute against Wales.
