Gabanes is a small village located in the Polish Valley in Spain. It is part of the Provincia de Burgos in the region of Castilla y León. Gabanes is one of 28 villages that are found in the Polish Valley.

Where is Gabanes?

Gabanes is about 167 miles (269 km) north of Madrid, the capital city of Spain. It is also 39 miles (62 km) northeast of Burgos, another important city. The village is quite close to the nuclear power station in Garoña.

The village has two main areas: Upper Gabanes and Lower Gabanes. These parts are separated by the Puron River. This river eventually flows into the larger Ebro River. The main road that goes through Gabanes is called BU-532.

What is the Economy Like?

Farms around Gabanes grow crops like wheat and sunflowers. The main products made here are bread, sunflower seeds, and other foods.

What Animals Live Here?

Gabanes is home to many wild animals. You might see deer, wild boars, and foxes. There are also smaller animals like rabbits and snakes. Birds of prey, such as eagles and vultures, fly in the skies above. These animals live across more than 1,000 hunting grounds in the area.

How Many People Live in Gabanes?

In 1950, Gabanes had 126 people living there. By 2004, the population went down to 20 people. In 2007, only 13 people lived in the village. However, in August, many tourists visit, which makes the number of people in Gabanes much higher!

A Look at Gabanes' History

Gabanes became an official village in the 13th century. At that time, it was grouped with 35 other villages under the town of Frías. Later, in 1834, the Tobalina Valley was divided into two parts. Gabanes became part of the area called Valle de Tobalina.

Interesting Places to See

Gabanes has some cool old places to visit:

  • The bridge that crosses the Puron River is over 300 years old. It is still in great condition today!
  • The village church is in the center of Gabanes. It is built in the Romanesque style, which is a very old type of architecture. Its bells were fixed up in 2005.
  • The name "Gabanes" might come from the word 'cabins'. This idea comes from old documents from the 14th century.
  • In the 17th century, Gabanes had a small medical center with two beds. It was near the town oven and a school. Sadly, the oven and school were taken down about 25 years ago to make it easier to get into the village.
  • The old water mill used to grind wheat. It was fixed in 2001 and is now a small museum you can visit.
  • Near the village, there is an ancient burial site called a necropolis. It has Paleolithic tombs and caves from a very long time ago.
  • Humion mountain is also nearby. It is very tall, reaching 1435 meters (about 4,708 feet) high.

Festivals and Traditions

Every year on August 15, Gabanes celebrates the Assumption of Mary. A special tradition during this festival is called "passing-streets." People go from house to house, trying the best dishes each family has made. Musicians play traditional songs from Burgos as everyone enjoys the food and fun!
