History of Gabbadah
The name Gabbadah comes from an Aboriginal term. It means "mouthful of water." This was the original name for the place where the Moore River meets the Indian Ocean.
Early Settlement
The Gabbadah area is the southern part of the Yued Noongar people's traditional land. People from Europe began settling here in 1905. Henry Brockman owned a large piece of land, about 100 acres. This land was set aside for people to use for picnics and camping.
In 1907, a well and three small houses were built. People could rent these houses for one shilling per week. The settlement grew over time.
Becoming Guilderton
In 1951, the settlement was officially renamed. It became the town of Guilderton.
Modern Gabbadah
Today, Gabbadah is a term used to describe the area between two coastal towns. These towns are Guilderton and Seabird. The eastern edge of Gabbadah is marked by the Moore River State Forest.
Roads and Homes
The Indian Ocean Drive road goes right through the middle of Gabbadah. Most of the homes are located east of this road. These homes are part of two semi-rural housing areas.
Redfield Park Estate
Redfield Park Estate is the northern housing area. It is located between the turnoffs for Seabird and Guilderton.
Sovereign Hill Estate
Sovereign Hill Estate is another housing area. It is just east of the turnoff for Guilderton, heading towards Perth.
Local Resources
There are two places where sand and limestone are dug up. These are called quarries. They are located near the border with Guilderton.
Population
The two housing areas, Redfield Park and Sovereign Hill, have a combined population. As of the 2021 census, 764 people live there permanently.
This makes Gabbadah the third most populated area in the Shire of Gingin. It is only behind Gingin and Lancelin. In fact, Gabbadah has more than twice the number of people than the towns of Guilderton and Seabird combined.
