Neergabby is a small farming area in Western Australia. It is located about 84 kilometers (52 miles) north of Perth. This special place is part of the Shire of Gingin.

Neergabby: A Place of Rivers

Neergabby is found where the Moore River and Gingin Brook meet. This meeting point is called a confluence. Because of this, Neergabby was very important a long time ago.

Early History and Importance

In the 1850s, this area was a key stop on the North West Stock Route. This route was used to move farm animals between Perth and Geraldton. People often called Neergabby "the Junction" because of the rivers meeting there.

Before Europeans arrived, the Noongar people lived here. Noongar women would gather food and medicinal plants in this area. It was a valuable place for them.

The Old Junction Bridge

A road was built in the early 1860s to connect Gingin to Neergabby and the Moore River. This road included the famous Old Junction Bridge. The bridge was built in 1863.

In 2002, part of the bridge collapsed. But the Neergabby Community Association worked hard to restore it. They finished the restoration in 2005, bringing this historic bridge back to life.

The Stock Route's Journey

The stock route through Neergabby was very busy for many years. But things changed in the 1890s. The Midland railway line was built a few kilometers to the east. This new railway made it easier to transport goods and animals.

Because of the railway, the stock route became less important in the early 1900s. It was used less, except for a short time during World War II. After that, mostly summer holiday makers used the route to reach coastal camping spots.

Farming in Neergabby Today

Neergabby is located in the Wheatbelt region. However, it's close to both the coast and fresh water from the rivers. This makes it a great place for different kinds of farming.

Today, you can find many citrus orchards in Neergabby. There are also farming retreats along Gingin Brook. This shows how the area's natural features help it grow and thrive.
