Gabriel Humberto Calderón (born on February 7, 1960) is a famous Argentinian football manager and former player. He is currently the manager of UAE Pro League team, Khor Fakkan Club.
Calderón played for many teams during his career. These included Argentinian clubs like Racing Club de Avellaneda and Club Atlético Independiente. He also played for Spanish team Real Betis and French team Paris Saint-Germain. He was part of the Argentina Under-20 team that won the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship.
After he stopped playing, he became a manager. He coached teams like Caen and Lausanne Sports. He also managed several teams in the Middle East. These include the Saudi Arabia national team, Oman national team, Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal, Baniyas, Bahrain national team, Al-Wasl, Qatar SC, and Khor Fakkan Club.

Playing Career
Gabriel Calderón was born in Rawson, Chubut Province, Argentina. He started his football journey in 1974 with the B team of Club El Porvenir. By 1976, he joined the main team.
In 1977, he moved to Racing Club de Avellaneda. He played there for three and a half seasons. During this time, he also played for Club Atlético Lanús on loan.
Later, he played for Club Atlético Independiente for two seasons. After that, he moved to Spain to play for Real Betis. He played 131 games for Betis and scored 38 goals. In 1987, he joined Paris Saint-Germain in France. He played for them for three seasons and was a key player in his second year.
In 1990, he moved to FC Sion in Switzerland. He returned to France in 1992 to play for Stade Malherbe Caen. The next year, he went back to Switzerland. He finished his playing career with FC Lausanne-Sport in 1994 when he was 34 years old.
International Career
Calderón played for the Argentina Under-20 team. They won the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship. In 1981, he was called up to the senior national team by coach César Luis Menotti. He played his first game against Brazil. He scored his only international goal in a match against Denmark.
He was part of the national team for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. He also played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, alongside Diego Maradona. He was a very important player for Argentina in the 1990 World Cup. Argentina reached the final match of the tournament. After this tournament, he stopped playing for the national team at age 30. He had played 23 games for Argentina and scored 1 goal.
Coaching Career
Early Years
Gabriel Calderón started his coaching career in 1997. He became the head coach of Stade Malherbe Caen, a club he had played for. In 2003, he was appointed head coach of Lausanne Sports, another former club. However, he left after only five weeks because of poor results.
Saudi Arabia National Team
At the end of 2004, Calderón became the coach for the Saudi Arabia national football team. He successfully led the Saudi team to qualify for the Football World Cup 2006 in Germany. They beat Uzbekistan 3–0 in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia was the only team in that qualification group that did not lose any matches. Calderón was very happy, saying that qualifying for the World Cup was a dream for any coach.
However, in December 2005, the Saudi Arabia Football Federation fired him. They were not happy with the team's performance in the Football at the 2005 West Asian Games. He was replaced by Marcos Paqueta.
Oman National Team
On April 9, 2007, Calderón signed a contract to coach the Oman national football team. He led the team in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup. Oman started with a 1–1 draw against Australia. They then lost 0–2 to co-host Thailand. After a 0–0 draw with Iraq, who won the tournament, Oman was eliminated in the group stage. On June 30, 2008, he resigned to become the new head coach of Saudi Al-Ittihad.
Al-Ittihad
On June 30, 2008, he returned to Saudi Arabia to coach Al-Ittihad. In his first season, he won the Saudi Premier League. His team beat Al-Hilal 2–1 in the final match. They finished five points ahead of Al-Hilal. However, they were knocked out of the 2008 ACL. They also lost the final of the King Cup of Champions to Al-Shabab.
In his second and final season at Al-Ittihad, he won the King Cup of Champions. They beat Al-Hilal in the final. He also led the club to the final of the 2009 AFC Champions League. They won their group and beat Al-Shabab 2–1. They then defeated Pakhtakor 5–1 and Nagoya Grampus 8–3 to reach the final. In the final, they faced Pohang Steelers in Japan. They lost 1–2 and finished as runner-up. Calderón was sacked two months later, on January 13, 2010.
Al-Hilal
On November 5, 2010, Calderón became the new head coach of Al-Hilal. He took over from Eric Gerets. He led the club to win the 2010–11 league without losing any games. He also won the Crown Prince Cup title. He guided the club to the knockout stage of the 2011 ACL. However, they were defeated by his former club, Al-Ittihad. Despite these achievements, he was dismissed on July 19, 2011. This happened after a 3–0 defeat to Al Ittihad in the King Cup of Champions.
Baniyas
On November 23, 2011, he was appointed head coach of UAE Pro-League team Baniyas SC. Baniyas was in 11th place before he arrived. He helped the club avoid being moved down to a lower league. They finished the league in 9th place. He also led the club to the final of the 2011-12 UAE President's Cup. They lost to Al-Jazira.
Under his leadership, Baniyas reached the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League. This was a first for the club. However, they were defeated by Al-Hilal, Calderón's former team. After this loss, he announced he would not renew his contract. He officially left the club on May 30, 2012.
Bahrain National Team
On October 28, 2012, Calderón became the head coach of the Bahrain national football team. He replaced Peter Taylor. His first game as manager was on December 9, 2012, against Yemen. He was sacked on August 13, 2013.
Real Betis
On January 19, 2014, he was appointed head coach of La Liga team Real Betis. He replaced Juan Carlos Garrido. He left the club at the end of the season.
Al-Wasl
In October 2014, Calderón was named the head coach of Al-Wasl. In May 2016, he left the club by agreement.
Qatar SC
On July 5, 2017, he signed a two-year contract with Qatar SC. He was sacked on November 22, 2017.
Persepolis
On July 1, 2019, Calderón became the manager of Persepolis. This team had recently won the Persian Gulf Pro League and Iranian Hazfi Cup. The previous manager, Branko Ivanković, had left. On January 12, 2020, Calderón resigned from Persepolis. This was due to money problems at the club.
