Gabrielle Anwar was born in Laleham, Surrey, a town west of London, England. Her mother, Shirley Hills, is an actress. Her father, Tariq Anwar, works as a film producer and editor.
Gabrielle went to Laleham C of E Primary and Middle School from 1975 to 1982. Even as a child, she showed a talent for acting in school plays. Later, she studied drama and dance at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London. This school is famous for training young performers.

Gabrielle Anwar started her acting journey in 1986 in a British TV miniseries called Hideaway. She also appeared in a music video for Paul McCartney's song "Pretty Little Head". Her first movie was Manifesto in 1988. After that, she acted in more British TV shows like Press Gang.
