The Gaià is a river in Catalonia, Spain. It is about 59 kilometers (37 miles) long. The river flows through the Tarragona Province and is an important part of the local environment.
The River's Journey
The Gaià River starts in a place called Santa Coloma de Queralt. This area is part of the Catalan Central Depression. The river collects water from the Serra de Brufaganya and Serra de Queralt mountains.
As it flows, the Gaià River carves its way through deep valleys. These valleys are found in the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. The river then passes near Santes Creus, a famous old monastery.
Finally, the Gaià River reaches the Mediterranean Sea. It flows into the sea near Tamarit Castle in Tarragonès, close to Altafulla. At its mouth, the river forms a special coastal lagoon. This lagoon is separated from the sea by a sandbar. The area where the river meets the sea is a protected area. This means it is kept safe for nature.
