The name Galena refers to two former towns in Nevada:
- Galena, Washoe County, Nevada: This was an abandoned town located in Washoe County.
- Galena, Lander County, Nevada: This is a ghost town found in Lander County.
Both towns were important during the mining booms of the 1800s. They got their name from "galena," which is a type of mineral. This mineral is a main source of lead and often contains silver.
Galena in Washoe County
Galena in Washoe County was a mining town that started in the 1860s. It was located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, not far from where the city of Reno is today.
A Silver Mining Town
This town was built because of the discovery of silver. Miners came hoping to find their fortune. The town had a mill, which was a factory that processed the ore (rock with valuable minerals) to get the silver out.
Why it Became Abandoned
