What is Galena's History?
Galena started as a mining town in 1860. This happened after people found silver in the eastern hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The town grew a lot after 1862. It also became an important place for cutting down trees and processing wood.
How Did Galena Grow?
By 1863, there were eleven sawmills working in Galena. Sawmills are places where logs are cut into lumber. The streets of the town were very busy. They were filled with different kinds of workers. These included charcoal burners, wood choppers, and miners. There were also people who worked with timber, mills, and teams of animals.
Why Was Galena Abandoned?
The town of Galena was abandoned after 1867. This happened because of two very bad fires. These fires caused a lot of damage, and people left the town.
What is Galena Like Today?
