History of Galice
Early Days: Gold Mining
Galice started as a mining town way back in 1852. It was named after one of the people who helped start it, Louis Galice. At first, it was called Galiceburg. The town was first built near Galice Creek, which flows into the Rogue River. This creek was a very popular spot for people looking for gold in the 1850s!
Community Growth and Changes
The people of Galice got their own post office in 1876. Later, in 1905, a school opened in the community. The first class had 11 students! However, the post office moved in 1922 and then closed completely in 1927. The school also closed its doors in the late 1940s.
New Industries and Tourism
After the gold mining slowed down, logging became the main business in Galice during the mid-1900s. This meant cutting down trees for wood. Later, tourism became more important. People started visiting the area for fun. A famous movie, Rooster Cogburn, starring John Wayne, even filmed some scenes nearby in Hellgate Canyon in 1975. Today, Galice has a few small businesses that cater to tourists.
