History of Gans
When Gans was first settled, it was part of the Cherokee Nation. This was a large area where the Cherokee people lived. The town was first called Jack Town.
Later, it was renamed Gann. This new name honored three brothers who were Cherokee Indians. Their names were Charlie Gann, Swimmer Gann, and Tom Gann.
A post office opened in Gann in 1896. A railroad company, the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad, built train tracks through the area around the same time. The railroad asked for the town's name to be changed to Gans. This was because they already had two other train stations named Gann. So, the post office officially changed its name to Gans in 1899.
Gans became an official town in 1902. This means it set up its own local government. It lost this status in 1933 but became an official town again in 1953. In 1957, a strong tornado caused a lot of damage to the town. But the people of Gans worked together to rebuild it.
