Garcinia macrophylla, often called pungara, is a type of plant that grows in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and the northern parts of South America. It is a member of the Garcinia group of plants.

Where Pungara Grows

Pungara plants are found in the Amazonian mountain forests. They usually grow at heights between 50 and 400 meters (about 164 to 1,312 feet) above sea level.

Climate Conditions

These plants thrive in warm and wet places. The average yearly temperature in these areas is usually between 26 and 28 °C (79–82 °F). They also need a lot of rain, with about 1,500 to 4,000 mm (59–157 inches) falling each year.

Uses of Pungara

In Bolivia, Garcinia macrophylla is often planted alongside other crops. This method is called intercropping.

Growing with Cocoa

Farmers plant pungara trees with cocoa plants. The pungara trees provide shade for the cocoa plants, which helps them grow better. Pungara also produces edible fruits, which means people can eat them. This makes the plant useful for both its shade and its tasty fruit.
