Garden Island Creek is a small, quiet community located southwest of Hobart in the beautiful Huon Valley region of Tasmania. It's a place where people live all year round, and many others visit for holidays and weekends.

This area was first settled in the 1800s. People were drawn here because of the huge supply of good timber. The local geography was also perfect, allowing ships to sail up the creek during high tide to collect the wood.

Life in Garden Island Creek

Garden Island Creek is known for its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty.

Past and Present Services

A long time ago, a post office served the community. The Garden Island Creek Post Office opened around 1875 but closed in 1969. In the early 1900s, there was even a local cricket team! Today, you can still find a public phone box near the creek, right by the Channel Highway (B68).

Local Attractions and Nature

Garden Island Creek has a small beach where you can relax. From the beach, you can see Garden Island, which is a short distance across the water. Interestingly, when photographed from above, Garden Island looks like a fish!

Farms and Nurseries

The community is home to a garden nursery, where you can find many plants. If you drive a short distance, you'll also discover several vineyards (places where grapes are grown for wine) and fruit farms.

A Brief History of Community Life

In the mid-1970s, Garden Island Creek was home to an ashram. This was a special community where about fifty followers of the Divine Light Mission lived and practiced their beliefs. Later, most of the members changed their beliefs and the community eventually disbanded.
