Building History and Design
This building was constructed between 1911 and 1912. It was designed by architects Kiehnel and Elliott. The building has a unique "Early Modern" style.
Special Features of the Building
Look closely at the building's design. You can see special decorations above the entrance doors. There are also wave-like shapes along the top edge, called the cornice. These designs might have come from a German art style called Jugendstil.
Original Purpose of the Building
The building first opened as the Central Turnverein. This was a German-American group for social events and sports. It was later known as the Central Athletic Association. Many sports competitions were held here, some even involving the University of Pittsburgh.
Role During World War I
During World War I, the building helped the country. It was used to house students who were part of the Student Army Training Corps. These students were training for the military.
Becoming Part of the University
After the war, the Dental School needed more space. So, in 1920, the university bought the building. It became a dental clinic and infirmary. At that time, it was called the Infirmary Building. In 1922, a new section was added. This made enough room for 200 dental chairs!
What the Building is Used For Now
Today, the Gardner Steel Conference Center is a busy place. It has many classrooms and computer labs. It is also home to the Academic Resource Center. This center helps students with their studies. The Innovation Institute is also located here. It helps new ideas and projects grow.
Computer Lab for Calculus
In 1995, the School of Engineering worked with the Department of Mathematics. They created a special computer lab. This lab helps students learn calculus using computers.
Former Clubs and Associations
The building used to be home to the Pitt Club. This was a club for university teachers and staff. It closed in 2003. It also once housed the General Alumni Association. This group connects former students. Now, that association is called the Pitt Alumni Association. It is located in Alumni Hall.
Who Was Gardner Steele?
The Gardner Steel Conference Center is named after Gardner Steele. He was a former student of the University of Pittsburgh. He also invested in oil fields in Oklahoma.
Gardner Steele's Time at Pitt
Gardner Steele started at the university in 1891. He was on one of the first football teams that played against other universities. He also held a record for the 100-yard dash while he was a student.
His Gift to the University
When Gardner Steele passed away in 1928, he left most of his money to the university. This generous gift helped the university greatly.
