This historic ghost town is found about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Hartsel. It is also about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of Fairplay. You can find Garo along Colorado Highway 9. The town sits at a high elevation of 9,197 feet (2,803 meters) above sea level.
Who Founded Garo?
The community of Garo was named after its founder, a local rancher named Marie Guiraud. She named the town in honor of her late husband, Louis Adolfe Guiraud. Both Marie and Louis were originally from France. Their hard work helped establish this settlement in the American West.
