Exploring Garretts Bend

Where is Garretts Bend?

Garretts Bend is found in the northeastern part of Lincoln County, West Virginia. It sits along the Trace Fork of the Mud River. The community gets its name from a special map made by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This map is called the "Garretts Bend" Quadrangle.

The village is spread out above a bend in the Trace Fork. This is where two smaller streams, the Hayzlett Fork and the Williams Fork, join together. A main road, Garretts Bend Road (County Highway 5), runs through the community. This road connects Griffithsville to Sod. Another road, Toney Branch Road (County Highway 58), also meets here.

Community Life and Landmarks

In Garretts Bend, you can find a few important places. The Garretts Bend Community Center is located along Garretts Bend Road. This is likely a place where people gather for events. There's also the Garrett Cemetery. It sits on a hilltop, looking over the highway to the southwest.

A Look at the Past

Maps from over a hundred years ago show how Garretts Bend has changed.

  • In 1909, an old map showed about a dozen buildings along the creek. There was even a church near the Hayzlett Fork.
  • By 1933, some buildings were gone, but new ones appeared. The old church was no longer there. However, a schoolhouse was built on a piece of land surrounded by the river bend.
  • The schoolhouse was still present in maps from 1958 and 1978. Around that time, a new church, Elizabeth Church, was built near where the 1909 church used to be.

Garretts Bend also had its own Post Office. It opened in 1876. This post office served the community for many years. However, it closed down in 1965. After that, mail for Garretts Bend was sent to Hamlin.
