A Look Back in Time
How Garrochales Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but not a state.
Counting the People: The Census
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. It helps the government understand how many people live in different areas. The first census found that 1,058 people lived in the Garrochales barrio.
Over the years, the number of people living in Garrochales has changed. The population has grown quite a bit since that first count.
