The Garrya fremontii is a type of flowering shrub. It is also known by other names like California fever bush, bearbrush, and Frémont's silktassel. Both the name "Frémont's silktassel" and the plant's scientific name, fremontii, come from a person named John C. Frémont.

Where it Grows

This plant naturally grows along the West Coast of the United States. You can find it from Washington all the way down to California. It lives in many different places, such as mountain forests, woodlands, and rocky canyons or slopes covered in chaparral plants.

What it Looks Like

Garrya fremontii is a shrub that can grow quite tall, reaching up to three or four meters (about 10 to 13 feet). Its leaves are shaped like ovals. They are usually 2 to 12 centimeters (about 1 to 5 inches) long and about half as wide. The leaves are smooth and green, though sometimes they might have a few hairs on their undersides.

Flowers and Fruit

This plant has separate male and female plants. This means that some plants only produce male flowers, and others only produce female flowers. Both types of plants grow long, hanging clusters of flowers. These flowers can be yellowish or pinkish in color.

After the flowers, the plant produces round fruits called berries. These berries start out green, then turn pink, and finally become purple when they are ripe. Birds and other animals like to eat these berries. When they eat the fruit, they help spread the seeds to new places.

How it Survives

The Garrya fremontii plant can also grow new shoots from its roots. This helps it survive. Like many plants that live in chaparral areas, it can quickly grow back after a wildfire. This ability helps it thrive in places where fires happen often.
