Gasherbrum I is a huge mountain that stands 8,080 metres (26,510 ft) tall. It is part of the Karakoram range. You can find it on the border between China and Pakistan.
This amazing peak is also known by other names. Some people call it K5. Others know it as Hidden Peak. It is the 11th highest mountain in the whole world.

What is Gasherbrum I?
Gasherbrum I is one of the tallest mountains on Earth. It is part of a group of mountains called the Gasherbrum massif. This group has several very high peaks. Gasherbrum I is the highest one in this group.
It is also one of the 14 mountains in the world that are over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) high. These are known as Eight-thousanders. Climbing any of these mountains is a huge challenge.
Where is this Mountain?
Gasherbrum I is located in the Karakoram mountain range. This range is in the Himalayas. The Karakoram is known for its very tall and rugged peaks. It is a wild and remote area.
The mountain sits right on the border. One side is in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The other side is in the Xinjiang region of China. This makes it an international mountain.
Climbing to the Top
Reaching the top of Gasherbrum I is very difficult. The weather is extreme, and the air is thin. Many brave climbers have tried to conquer it.
The first people to successfully climb Gasherbrum I were Pete Schoening and Andy Kauffman. They were part of an American team. They reached the summit on July 5, 1958. This was a major achievement in mountain climbing history.
Later, in 2012, two Polish climbers made history. Adam Bielecki and Janusz Gołąb completed the first winter ascent. Climbing an 8,000-meter peak in winter is incredibly dangerous. It requires extreme skill and courage.
Why is it Called Hidden Peak?
The name "Hidden Peak" was given to Gasherbrum I by a British explorer. Thomas George Montgomerie saw the mountain in 1856. He called it "Hidden Peak" because it is hidden behind other mountains in the Gasherbrum group.
The name "Gasherbrum" itself comes from the local Balti language. It means "beautiful mountain." This shows how much local people admire these giant peaks.
