Gastrolobium praemorsum is a type of scrambling shrub. It grows only in the south-west part of Western Australia. This means it is endemic to that area.
This plant belongs to the Fabaceae family, which includes peas and beans. It produces beautiful red pea-flowers. These flowers bloom from late winter to early summer. In Australia, this is usually from August to December. Some plants in the Gastrolobium group are known to be poisonous. However, it is not known if Gastrolobium praemorsum also has these toxic properties.
Understanding the Plant's Name
A botanist named Carl Meissner first described this plant. He wrote about it in a book called Plantae Preissianae in 1844. At first, he named it Brachysema praemorsa.
Later, in 2002, two other botanists, Gregory Chandler and Michael Crisp, changed its name. They moved this plant into the Gastrolobium group. Many similar plants are now part of this group.
