Gastón Exequiel Ramírez Pereyra (born 2 December 1990) is a professional footballer from Uruguay. He plays as an attacking midfielder for Miramar Misiones.
Gastón started his career in Uruguay with Peñarol. He then moved to Italy to play for Bologna. Later, he joined Southampton in the Premier League in England. During his time at Southampton, he also played on loan for Hull City and Middlesbrough. He later joined Middlesbrough permanently.
In 2017, Gastón returned to Italy to play for Sampdoria. He then played for Monza and Virtus Entella. In 2023, he moved to Argentina to play for San Lorenzo. In 2024, he returned to Peñarol, and in 2025, he joined Miramar Misiones.
Gastón has also played for the Uruguay national team since 2010. He represented his country at the 2012 Olympics, the 2013 Confederations Cup, and the 2014 World Cup.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at Peñarol
Gastón Ramírez was born in Fray Bentos, Uruguay. When he was 16, he moved to Montevideo to join the football club Peñarol. He played his first professional game for the club at 18 years old in March 2009.
His second year at Peñarol was very successful. He started playing more often for the first team. Gastón scored his first goal for Peñarol in December 2009. He scored six goals in 30 games that season. His help led the club to win the 2009–10 Primera División title.
Because of his great performances, big European clubs like Schalke 04 and Bologna became interested in him.
Moving to Bologna
In August 2010, Gastón Ramírez moved to Italy. He joined Bologna, a team in Serie A, Italy's top football league.
He made his debut for Bologna in September 2010. A month later, he scored his first goals for the club in an Italian Cup game. He scored his first Serie A goal in January 2011. Gastón finished his first season with four goals in 25 league games. He also scored three goals in two Italian Cup matches.
Before the 2011–12 season, other big clubs like Manchester City and Inter Milan wanted to sign him. Gastón wanted to leave, but his teammate convinced him to stay. He scored his first goal of the 2011–12 season in October 2011. His good play earned him a new contract with Bologna until 2016. He scored eight goals in 33 games that season.
Even with a new contract, clubs like Napoli and Juventus were still interested. In August 2012, he was close to joining Southampton in England. After some discussions, the deal was finally agreed upon.
Playing for Southampton
On 31 August 2012, Gastón Ramírez joined Southampton in the Premier League. He signed a four-year contract with the English club.
He played his first game for Southampton in September 2012. Two weeks later, he scored his first goal for the team. In January 2013, he scored in a 1–1 draw against Arsenal. He scored five goals in 22 games during his first season.
For the 2013–14 season, Southampton decided not to sell Gastón, even though other European clubs were interested. He scored two goals in the Football League Trophy. He also scored his first league goal of the season in December 2013. He played 18 games that season.
In the 2014–15 season, Gastón played only one game for Southampton. The new manager, Ronald Koeman, was unsure about his future at the club.
After his loan at Hull City ended, Gastón was told he was not part of Southampton's plans. He made a few appearances in the 2015–16 season. At the end of that season, Southampton released him.
Loan to Hull City
In September 2014, Gastón Ramírez was loaned to Hull City, another Premier League team. He wanted to show Hull City fans what he could do.
He made his debut two weeks later. In November, he received a red card in a game against Tottenham Hotspur. He scored one goal in 22 games for Hull City. This goal was a long-range shot against Sunderland in December. He also provided assists for teammates.
Hull City was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2014–15 season.
Time at Middlesbrough
On 26 January 2016, Gastón Ramírez joined Middlesbrough on loan. Middlesbrough was in the Championship at the time.
He made his debut in February. Two weeks later, he scored his first goal for Middlesbrough. In March, he scored two goals in a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which put his team at the top of the Championship table. He scored four more goals that season. In May, he helped Middlesbrough win promotion back to the Premier League.
After leaving Southampton, Gastón permanently rejoined Middlesbrough in July 2016. He signed a three-year contract. He said the fans played a big part in his decision to return. He scored his first goal for the team in October 2016. This goal won the BBC Goal of the Month award for October.
In December 2016, he scored against his former club, Hull City. In January 2017, Leicester City tried to buy him, but Middlesbrough refused. Gastón faced some challenges with injuries and competition for his spot. Middlesbrough was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2016–17 season. He made 26 appearances and scored twice that season.
Before the 2017–18 season, Gastón was linked with other clubs. He eventually left Middlesbrough.
Playing for Sampdoria
On 4 August 2017, Gastón Ramírez joined Sampdoria, a Serie A club in Italy. He said that playing in England helped him grow as a player. He felt he had the right experience for this new step in his career.
He made his debut for Sampdoria in the first game of the season. He helped set up a goal for his teammate Fabio Quagliarella. He played for Sampdoria until 2021.
Later Career in Italy and Argentina
In December 2021, Gastón moved to Serie B side Monza in Italy. He played there until June 2022.
In October 2022, he signed with Serie C club Virtus Entella.
On 4 August 2023, Gastón joined San Lorenzo in Argentina. He played there until the end of 2024.
In 2024, he returned to his first club, Peñarol. In 2025, he joined Miramar Misiones.
International Career
In 2009, Gastón Ramírez played in the FIFA U-20 World Cup for Uruguay's youth team. On 8 October 2010, he played his first full game for the Uruguay senior team. It was a friendly match against Indonesia.
In July 2012, he was chosen for the Uruguay squad for the 2012 Summer Olympics football tournament. He scored a goal in a warm-up match. He also scored from a free-kick in their opening game against the United Arab Emirates.
In June 2013, Gastón was selected for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He started in two group games. Uruguay finished fourth in the tournament.
On 31 May 2014, Gastón was named in Uruguay's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He made his World Cup debut in the last group game against Italy. Just three minutes after coming on, he provided the cross that led to the only goal of the game. This goal helped Uruguay move to the next stage of the tournament.
After missing the Copa América due to injury, Gastón played for Uruguay again in 2016. He was also included in the Copa América Centenario squad, where he played in all three matches.
He was part of the squad for the China Cup in March 2018. In May 2018, he was named in Uruguay's team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Personal Life
Gastón Ramírez married Micaela Duarte in 2012. In early 2016, they welcomed their daughter. When he moved to England, Gastón took English lessons. This was part of the requirements for his work permit.
