Gate is a small community in Thurston County, Washington, USA. It's not a big city with its own government. Instead, it's a quiet place located along the Black River. You can find Gate about 2.9 miles (4.7 km) northwest of Rochester.

Gate's History

Gate was started in 1881. Its streets and lots were officially planned out in 1890. A big reason Gate grew was the Northern Pacific Railway. They built a train junction here. This made Gate a busy place for the lumber industry.

The community got its name "Gate" because of this important railroad junction. It was seen as the "gateway to the coast" for travelers and goods. Sadly, fires damaged much of the town in the early 1900s. Also, the lumber mills in the area started to close down. This made it harder for Gate's economy to thrive.

Arts and Culture in Gate

One important building in Gate is the Gate School. This old school is very special. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a historic site that should be preserved.

Fun Outdoors in Gate

Gate is a great spot for outdoor fun. It's the starting point for the Gate to Belmore Trail. This trail is a "rail trail," which means it was built on an old railroad line. It's a perfect place for walking or biking.

Near Gate, you can explore some amazing natural areas. The Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve is northeast of the community. It's known for its mysterious, naturally formed mounds. This preserve is so unique that it's been named a National Natural Landmark.
