Where is Gates Located?
Gates is found in the middle of Monroe County. It's in the eastern part of the larger Town of Gates. To the east, it shares a border with the big city of Rochester. To the north, you'll find another community called North Gates.
Getting Around Gates
A major highway, Interstate 490, goes right through the center of Gates. This highway connects with Interstate 390 on the eastern side of Gates.
Two other important roads help people get around. New York State Route 33 (also known as Buffalo Road) marks the southern edge of the community. Part of the northern edge is formed by New York State Route 31 (Lyell Avenue). Downtown Rochester is only about 6 miles (10 km) to the east.

The southern part of Gates, south of Interstate 490, is home to a smaller area called Gates Center. This is a historic part of the community.
