Gates is a town located in Monroe County, New York. It's named after a famous general, Horatio Gates. In 2010, about 28,400 people lived there. Two special areas, Gates and North Gates, are also part of the town. Gates is a suburb, meaning it's a smaller community near the big city of Rochester, New York.

History of Gates

Gates started as a place called "Northampton" in 1797. It was part of Ontario County back then. In 1808, the area was divided. The part that became Gates was officially named on April 1, 1813. This was done to honor General Horatio Gates.

In 1821, Monroe County was created, and Gates became part of it. Later, some parts of Gates were used to form the city of Rochester and the town of Greece. These places now share borders with Gates.

The Franklin Hinchey House is an old building in Gates. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's an important historical site.

Geography and Location

Gates covers a total area of about 15.3 square miles (39.58 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 15.2 square miles (39.37 square kilometers). A small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.21 square kilometers), is water. This water makes up about 0.52% of the town's total area.

Economy and Businesses

Gates is home to some big companies. Wegmans Food Markets, a popular grocery store chain, has its main office here.

The Rochester Tech Park is also located in Gates. This used to be a large manufacturing plant for Kodak. Now, many different companies are based there. These include Kodak Alaris, Pepsi Bottling Group, Citigroup, and Maximus Inc.. This park provides many jobs for people in the area.
