Gautam Gambhir (born 14 October 1981) is a famous Indian former cricketer and politician. He is now the head coach for the Indian cricket team. He played for India in all types of cricket games from 2003 to 2016. He was the first Indian batsman to be in the Top 10 in ICC Rankings for all three cricket formats.
From 2019 to 2024, he was a member of the 17th Lok Sabha, which is like being a representative in the Indian Parliament. In 2019, he received the Padma Shri award from the Indian government. This is the fourth highest award a civilian can get in India.
As a cricketer, Gambhir was a left-handed opening batsman. He played for the Delhi team and led the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He helped India win the finals of both the 2007 World Twenty20 and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He also led the Kolkata Knight Riders to win IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. In 2024, he guided them to another win as their mentor.
Gambhir was one of only four international cricketers to score centuries in five Test matches in a row. He also received the Arjuna Award in 2008, which is India's second highest sports award. In 2009, he was ranked the number one batsman in ICC Test rankings and won the ICC Test Player of the Year award.
In December 2018, he stopped playing all forms of cricket. In 2019, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected to the Lok Sabha from East Delhi. He was a mentor for IPL teams like Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders. In July 2024, he became the head coach of the Indian Men's Cricket Team.

Early Life and Family
Gautam Gambhir was born in New Delhi, India, on October 14, 1981. His father, Deepak Gambhir, runs a textiles business, and his mother is Seema Gambhir. He has a younger sister named Ekta.
Gautam started playing cricket when he was 10 years old. He went to Modern School, New Delhi. He was chosen for the first group at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in 2000. In October 2011, Gambhir married Natasha Jain.
Playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Gambhir was a very popular player in the Indian Premier League.
Delhi Daredevils
In the first IPL auction, the Delhi Daredevils team bought Gambhir. He scored 534 runs in 14 matches, making him the second-highest run-scorer in the first season. He became the captain of the Delhi Daredevils in 2010. He was the only player from the Delhi Daredevils to score over 1000 runs in the IPL.
In 2018, he returned to the Delhi Daredevils as captain. However, he later stepped down as captain because the team was not performing well.
Kolkata Knight Riders
In 2011, the Kolkata Knight Riders bought Gambhir for $2.4 million, making him the highest-paid cricketer in IPL history at that time. He became the captain of the team.
Under his leadership, the Kolkata Knight Riders won their first IPL title in 2012. They beat the Chennai Super Kings in the final. He also led them to their second title in 2014. Gambhir is the top run-scorer for the Kolkata Knight Riders, with 3375 runs. He also helped the team reach the playoffs in 2016 and 2017.
Mentoring Role
After retiring from playing, Gambhir became a mentor for IPL teams. In 2021, he was the mentor for the new team, Lucknow Super Giants. In 2023, he returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders as their mentor. In 2024, he helped the Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL title again as their mentor.

Early International Matches
Gambhir played many One Day International (ODI) matches for India between 2005 and 2007. He was not chosen for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, which made him feel very disappointed.
After India's early exit from the 2007 World Cup, Gambhir was selected for a tour to Bangladesh. He scored his second century on that tour. He then played against Ireland and scored an unbeaten 80 runs, earning him the Man of the Match award.
Winning the 2007 T20 World Cup
Gambhir was part of India's team for the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa. India won this tournament, beating Pakistan in the final. Gambhir was India's top run-scorer in the tournament, with 227 runs. He scored a very important 75 runs off 54 balls in the final match against Pakistan.
Golden Period in Cricket
In 2008, Gambhir became a strong player in the Indian Test team. He scored 858 runs in seven matches, including a double century against Australia. He was the top run-scorer in Test series against England (2008) and New Zealand (2009).
In 2009, Gambhir played a crucial role in India's Test series win in New Zealand. He scored 137 runs in one match, staying at the crease for a very long time to save the game. His opening partner, Virender Sehwag, even called him 'The Second Wall' because of his strong batting, like Rahul Dravid. Gambhir scored 445 runs in that series, helping India win a series in New Zealand after 41 years.
Awards and Rankings
In 2009, Gambhir was named the ICC Test Player of the Year. He was also ranked the No. 1 batsman in the ICC Test rankings in July 2009. He continued his great form, scoring centuries against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He became the fourth player to score centuries in five consecutive Test matches.
Leading the Team Briefly
In 2010, Gambhir was made captain of the Indian team for an ODI series against New Zealand. He scored an unbeaten 126 runs in one match, helping India win the series 5–0. He was named the Man of the Series.
2011 Cricket World Cup Heroics
In the final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Gambhir scored a strong 97 runs off 122 balls. He came to bat early in the game and helped India build important partnerships with Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. His innings was key to India winning the World Cup.
Comeback and Retirement
After a break from international cricket, Gambhir was called back to the Test team in October 2016. On December 3, 2018, Gambhir announced he was retiring from all forms of cricket. In his final first-class match, he scored 112 runs.
On July 9, 2024, Gambhir became the new head coach of the Indian Men's Cricket Team.
Gautam Gambhir Foundation
The Gautam Gambhir Foundation is a charity started by Gautam Gambhir in 2014. It is based in Delhi.
One of its main goals is to help children of soldiers who have died. The foundation supports their education. It also works with teenage girls from less fortunate families, teaching them about health and nutrition. The foundation also plants trees in Delhi to help fight air pollution.
In 2017, Gambhir started community kitchens through his foundation to provide free meals. In 2020, he announced a plan to give free meals to people in need in his area, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Political Career
On March 22, 2019, Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He ran for election from East Delhi in the 2019 Indian general election. He won the election with a large number of votes.
As a Member of Parliament, Gambhir visited the Ghazipur landfill many times and worked on improving it. He also installed CCTV cameras in his area to help with women's safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated two years of his salary as an MP. His foundation also organized COVID-19 vaccination camps.
On March 2, 2024, he announced that he was leaving politics to focus on his cricket work.
