Gautam Gambhir, born on October 14, 1981, is a famous Indian cricket coach. He used to be a top international cricketer and also a politician. He played for India in all types of cricket from 2003 to 2016. He was also a Member of Parliament for East Delhi from 2019 to 2024. In 2019, he received the Padma Shri, a very important award from the Indian government.

As a cricketer, Gambhir was a left-handed opening batsman. He played for his home team Delhi. He also led teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He first played for India in a One Day International (ODI) match in 2003. His first Test match was in 2004.

Gambhir was a key player in India's big wins. He helped India win the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He also led the Kolkata Knight Riders to win the IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Later, he helped them win again as a mentor in 2024.

Gambhir is one of only a few cricketers to score centuries in five Test matches in a row. He also scored over 300 runs in four Test series in a row. Early Life and Family

Gautam Gambhir was born in New Delhi. His father, Deepak Gambhir, runs a textiles business. His mother, Seema Gambhir, is a housewife. Gautam has a younger sister named Ekta.

When he was very young, Gautam was adopted by his grandparents and lived with them. He started playing cricket when he was 10 years old. He went to Modern School, New Delhi but did not go to college. He was coached by Sanjay Bharadwaj and Raju Tandon. In 2000, he was chosen for the first group at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

In October 2011, Gambhir married Natasha Jain. She comes from a well-known business family. They live in the Rajendra Nagar area of Delhi.

Playing in the IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a popular cricket tournament. In the first IPL player auction, Delhi Daredevils signed Gambhir. He scored 534 runs in 14 matches, making him the second-highest run-scorer that season. He was named captain of the team in 2010.

In 2011, Kolkata Knight Riders bought Gambhir. He became the highest-paid cricketer in IPL history at that time. He was made captain of the team. Under his leadership, Kolkata Knight Riders reached the IPL playoffs. They also qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 for the first time.

Gambhir led the team to their first IPL title in 2012. They beat Chennai Super Kings in the final. He scored many half-centuries that season. International Cricket Career

Early Days in Cricket

After being out of the Test team, Gambhir played many One Day Internationals for India. However, he was not chosen for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. This made him feel very sad, and he even thought about quitting cricket.

After India's early exit from the 2007 World Cup, Gambhir was picked for a tour to Bangladesh. He scored his second century on that tour. He then played in a series in Ireland, where he scored an unbeaten 80 runs. He said he wanted to play more consistently.

Gambhir was part of India's team for the 2007 ICC World Twenty20. India won this tournament in South Africa. Gambhir was India's top scorer with 227 runs. He scored a very important 75 runs in the final against Pakistan.

In 2008, Gambhir had to miss a Test series due to a shoulder injury. Later, he scored an unbeaten 102 against Sri Lanka. He also scored a career-best 113 against Australia. He was the top run-scorer in that series with 440 runs.

In 2008, Gambhir became a strong player in the Indian Test team. He scored 858 runs in seven matches. This included a double century against Australia. He was banned for one Test match after accidentally elbowing a bowler. Despite missing a match, he was the top scorer in that series.

He was also the top run-scorer in Test series against England (2008) and New Zealand (2009). This meant he was the top scorer in three series in a row.

In 2009, Gambhir played his first big Test series outside Asia, in New Zealand. In one match, he scored 137 runs to save the game. He stayed at the crease for a very long time. His opening partner, Virender Sehwag, called him 'The Second Wall'. Gambhir scored 445 runs in six innings. This helped India win the series in New Zealand after 41 years.

Rising Through the Ranks

Gambhir was named the ICC Test Player of the Year for 2009. For a short time, he was ranked the number one batsman in the world. He continued his great form in a Test series against Sri Lanka at home. He scored a century to help India draw a match. He also made a huge opening partnership with Sehwag.

In January 2009, Gambhir scored a quick 116 runs against Bangladesh. This was his fifth century in five Tests. Only Don Bradman has scored six centuries in as many matches. He also set a record by scoring 50 or more runs in 11 matches in a row.

Leading the Team Briefly

In 2010, Gambhir was made captain of the Indian team for an ODI series against New Zealand. He scored an unbeaten 126 runs to help India win the series. India won all five matches, and Gambhir was named Man of the Series. He also captained India in a match against the West Indies in 2011.

After Captaincy

In the final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Gambhir scored a strong 97 runs. He came in to bat early and helped India build important partnerships. He played a key role in India winning the World Cup.

In 2011, India's Test batting struggled, especially away from home. Gambhir also found it tough to score centuries in Tests that year. However, he played very well in ODIs, averaging 56.90 runs.

In February 2012, Gambhir scored 92 runs in an ODI against Australia. This helped India win their first match against Australia at that ground. He also scored 91 runs against Sri Lanka, which led to a thrilling tied match. In August 2012, he was made vice-captain of the T20 squad for the World Cup.

Return to International Cricket

After a long break from international cricket, Gambhir was called back to the Test team. This happened on October 8, 2016, for a series against New Zealand. He had been playing well in domestic cricket.

In October 2018, Gambhir scored his 10,000th run in List A cricket. On December 3, 2018, he announced he was retiring from all forms of cricket. His last match was for the Delhi cricket team. In that final game, he scored 112 runs, which was his 43rd century in first-class cricket.

Coaching Career

In 2022, Gautam Gambhir became a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. Under his guidance, the team reached the playoffs in 2022 and 2023. In late 2023, he returned to Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor. He led them to win their third IPL title in 2024.

On July 9, 2024, Gambhir became the new head coach of the Indian national cricket team. He signed a three-year contract until the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup. In his first big tournament as coach, Gambhir led India to win the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. This was India's first ICC title under his leadership.

Gautam Gambhir Foundation

The Gautam Gambhir Foundation is a charity started by Gautam Gambhir in 2014. It is based in Delhi. In 2017, he started community kitchens through the Foundation. These kitchens provide free meals to people in Delhi so no one goes hungry.

A main goal of the Foundation is to help children of soldiers who have died. They support their education. The Foundation also works with teenage girls from poor families. They teach them about good nutrition, health, and hygiene. They also plant trees in Delhi to help fight air pollution. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gambhir's foundation also set up vaccination camps.

Political Career

On March 22, 2019, Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was chosen to run for election from East Delhi. He won the elections with a large number of votes.

As a Member of Parliament, Gambhir visited the Ghazipur landfill many times. He worked on plans to improve it. He also installed CCTV cameras in his area to help with women's safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gambhir donated his salary as an MP. His foundation also started COVID-19 vaccination camps.

On March 2, 2024, Gambhir announced that he asked the BJP to let him leave politics. He wanted to focus on his cricket work again.
