Team History
The IPL started in 2008 and is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Eight teams, each representing a different Indian city, were chosen to play. The Delhi team was bought by the GMR Group for US$84 million.
In 2018, the GMR Group sold half of the team to JSW Sports. Later that year, the team changed its name from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals. The owners explained that Delhi is the capital city of India, so the new name shows the team's connection to the city's importance.
In 2024, the team agreed to buy Hampshire County Cricket Club in England and a share in the Hundred team Southern Brave.
Season Highlights
The Delhi Capitals, previously known as the Delhi Daredevils, have had many seasons in the IPL.
Early Years (2008-2009)
In the first IPL season (2008), the Delhi Daredevils played well, winning many matches. They reached the semi-finals but lost to the Rajasthan Royals.
In 2009, under captain Gautam Gambhir, the team was very strong and finished at the top of the league table. Star players like Virender Sehwag and AB de Villiers helped them score big runs. However, they lost in the semi-final to the Deccan Chargers, even though they had the best record in the league stage.
Ups and Downs (2010-2018)
After a tough 2011 season where they finished last, the team bounced back in 2012. They bought new players like Kevin Pietersen and Mahela Jayawardene and finished first in the league table, making it to the playoffs.
The 2013 and 2014 seasons were difficult, with the team finishing last both times. In 2014, they didn't keep any players from their previous squad, hoping for a fresh start. Despite the struggles, players like JP Duminy performed well.
In 2015, they finished seventh. For the 2016 season, they brought in new players like Pawan Negi and Chris Morris. Zaheer Khan became the new captain. The team improved, winning 5 of their first 7 matches, but they just missed out on the playoffs, finishing sixth. They finished sixth again in 2017.
In 2018, the team kept key players like Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Ricky Ponting became the new coach.
Recent Success (2019-Present)
In 2019, after changing their name to Delhi Capitals, the team had a great season. They traded for Shikhar Dhawan and brought in former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly as an advisor. They reached the playoffs for the first time in seven years and finished as second runners-up, which was their best result at that time.
The 2020 season was their most successful. They won many games and reached the IPL final for the first time ever. They played against the Mumbai Indians but were defeated. All games that season were played in the UAE due to the pandemic.
In 2021, the team was at the top of the points table before the tournament was stopped due to COVID-19. The remaining matches were later played in the UAE. Steve Smith was made captain after Shreyas Iyer got injured.
In 2023, David Warner was named captain with Axar Patel as vice-captain because Rishabh Pant was injured. The team finished ninth and did not make it to the playoffs.
Home Ground
The Delhi Capitals play their home matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. They also have the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur as a second home ground, but they haven't played there since 2016.
