Shreyas Santosh Iyer (born on December 6, 1994) is a talented Indian cricket player. He bats right-handed for the Indian cricket team. Shreyas has played in all three main types of international cricket matches. These are Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
He made history by scoring a century (100 runs) in his very first Test match. He also scored a half-century (50 runs) in the second part of that same match. This happened against New Zealand in November 2021. He was the first Indian player ever to achieve this amazing feat.
In Indian domestic cricket, Shreyas plays for the Mumbai team. He also captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2022 to 2024. He was part of the India Under-19 cricket team in the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Shreyas was also a key player in the Indian team for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He scored a century against New Zealand in the semi-finals. He also helped India win the 2023 Asia Cup. In 2024, he led the Kolkata Knight Riders to win their first IPL title as captain. This made him the fifth Indian player to lead a team to an IPL championship.
Shreyas first gained attention in the IPL when the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) bought him in 2015. They paid 2.6 crore for him, which was a lot of money. That season, he scored 439 runs and won the IPL Emerging Player of the Year award. He became a very important player for the team and later became their captain. He scored over 400 runs in four different IPL seasons.

Early Life and Cricket Start
Shreyas Iyer was born in Chembur, Mumbai, on December 6, 1994. His father, Santosh Iyer, is from the Tamil community. His mother, Rohini Iyer, is from the Tulu community. His family originally came from Thrissur, Kerala. He went to Don Bosco High School, Matunga and later to Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
When Shreyas was 18, a coach named Pravin Amre noticed him. This happened at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana. Coach Amre helped Shreyas learn and improve his cricket skills early on. Other players his age used to compare his batting style to the famous cricketer Virender Sehwag. While he was in college, Shreyas helped his college team win six different trophies.
Playing for Teams in India
In 2014, Shreyas played for the Trent Bridge Cricket Team in the UK. He played three matches and scored 297 runs, averaging 99 runs per game. He even set a new team record by scoring 171 runs in one match.
Shreyas started playing for Mumbai in a type of cricket called List A in November 2014. This was during the 2014–15 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He scored 273 runs in that tournament. Then, in December 2014, he played his first first-class cricket match in the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. In his first Ranji season, he scored 809 runs, including two centuries. He was the 7th highest scorer that season.
In the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy, Shreyas was the top scorer. He made 1,321 runs, with four centuries. He was only the second player to score over 1,300 runs in a single Ranji Trophy season. He continued his good form in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy, scoring 725 runs. He also scored an amazing 202 runs not out against the Australian team in a practice match.
In 2018, Shreyas became the vice-captain for Mumbai in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was the top scorer for Mumbai in that tournament. He also captained India B's team in the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy and was the top scorer there too. In February 2019, he scored 147 runs in a T20 match. This was the highest score by an Indian batsman in a T20 match at that time.
Shreyas was supposed to play for Lancashire in England in 2021. However, he had to miss it due to an injury. Because of his duties with the Indian national team, he did not play in the 2022 and 2023 domestic seasons. In February 2024, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) asked him to play in the 2024 Ranji Trophy. He helped Mumbai win the 2024 Ranji Trophy by scoring 95 runs in the final.
Indian Premier League Journey
Shreyas Iyer joined the Indian Premier League (IPL) in February 2015. The Delhi Daredevils bought him for 2.6 crores. This made him the highest-paid uncapped player (a player who hasn't played for the national team yet) in the tournament. He scored 439 runs in 14 matches and won the "Emerging Player of the Year" award in 2015.
The Delhi Daredevils kept Shreyas for the 2018 IPL season. On April 25, 2018, he became the new captain of the team, replacing Gautam Gambhir. He was the youngest captain for Delhi Daredevils in IPL history at 23 years old. In his first match as captain, Shreyas scored an unbeaten 93 runs off just 40 balls. He hit 10 sixes and won the "man of the match" award. Under his leadership, Delhi Daredevils won their second match of the tournament.
The Delhi Daredevils team changed its name to Delhi Capitals for the 2019 season. Shreyas continued as captain and led the team to the playoffs. This was the first time they reached the playoffs in seven years. In the 2020 season, he led the Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final. They lost to the Mumbai Indians in the final, but it was their best performance in IPL history.
Shreyas missed half of the IPL 2021 season because of a shoulder injury. When he returned, the team decided to keep Rishabh Pant as captain. Before the 2022 season, Delhi released Shreyas. The Kolkata Knight Riders then bought him for ₹12.25 crores and made him their captain. Even though the team finished 7th, he scored 401 runs, the most for his team that year. He missed the 2023 season due to a back injury.
He returned as captain for the 2024 season. This season was very important for him. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders to finish at the top of the league stage. In the final, the Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets. This win gave them their third IPL title. Shreyas became the second captain to lead the Knight Riders to an IPL trophy. He also became the first captain to lead two different teams to an IPL final.

Captaining Delhi Teams
In the 2018 IPL, Gautam Gambhir stepped down as captain. Shreyas was then made the temporary captain for the rest of the tournament. Under his leadership, the Delhi Daredevils won 4 out of 8 games.
The Delhi team changed its name to Delhi Capitals before the 2019 season. Shreyas was named the full-time captain. He led the Capitals to finish third in the points table. They reached the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2012.
In the 2020 season, Shreyas led the Capitals to finish second. They reached their first-ever IPL final. Even though they lost the final, it was the best performance in the team's history. Shreyas Iyer is the only captain to lead the Delhi Capitals to an IPL Final.
Captaining Kolkata Knight Riders
The Kolkata Knight Riders bought Shreyas in the 2022 auction. They also made him the captain of their team. The 2022 season was a bit tough, and the team finished 7th. Shreyas missed the 2023 season due to a back injury.
Shreyas returned as captain for the 2024 season. The Kolkata Knight Riders finished at the top of the table. This was the first time in IPL history they finished first. Shreyas became the third captain to lead the Knight Riders to an IPL final. He is also the only captain to take two different teams to an IPL final.
In the 2024 Indian Premier League final, the Kolkata Knight Riders won their third IPL Trophy. Shreyas became the second captain to lead the Knight Riders to victory. He is also the fifth Indian captain to win an IPL title.
International Cricket Career
In March 2017, Shreyas was added to India's Test squad. He was a replacement player for Virat Kohli against Australia. He was a substitute fielder and helped run out a player.
In October 2017, Shreyas was chosen for India's Twenty20 International (T20I) team. He made his T20I debut against New Zealand on November 1, 2017. He did not get to bat in that match.
In November 2017, Shreyas was also picked for India's One Day International (ODI) team. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on December 10, 2017. In his second ODI, he scored 88 runs off 70 balls against Sri Lanka.
On December 18, 2019, Shreyas scored 31 runs in one over against the West Indies. This was the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in a single over in ODIs. In January 2020, he scored an unbeaten 58 runs off 29 balls against New Zealand in a T20I. He was named "Man of the Match." He also scored his first century in ODI cricket against New Zealand in February 2020.
In September 2021, Shreyas was a reserve player for India's 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup squad. In November 2021, he was named in India's Test squad against New Zealand. He made his Test debut on November 25, 2021.
On his Test debut, Shreyas received his Test cap from the legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. He then scored a century in his first innings. He became the 16th Indian player to score a century on Test debut. He was also the first Indian player to score a century and a half-century in both innings of his debut Test match.
In March 2022, Shreyas was named "man of the match" in a Test against Sri Lanka. He scored two important half-centuries on a difficult pitch. Because of his excellent performance, he was named the ICC player of the month for February 2022. In October 2022, he scored his second ODI century against South Africa.
Shreyas missed some matches in early 2023 due to back pain. He had surgery in England in April. After recovering, he was named in the squad for the 2023 Asia Cup. He made a strong comeback by scoring 105 runs off 90 balls against Australia in September 2023. India won that match, and Shreyas won the "Man of the Match" award.
