2024 Sunrisers Hyderabad season |
Sunrisers Hyderabad (often called SRH) is a professional cricket team from Hyderabad, Telangana, India. They play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is a big T20 cricket tournament. The team is owned by Kalanithi Maran from the SUN Group. SRH was started in 2012 after another Hyderabad team, the Deccan Chargers, was no longer part of the IPL.
Currently, Daniel Vettori is the coach and Pat Cummins is the captain. Their main home ground is the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. This stadium can hold about 39,000 fans!
SRH first played in the IPL in 2013. They did well and reached the playoffs, finishing fourth. The team won their first IPL title in 2016. They beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 runs in a thrilling final match. From 2016 to 2020, SRH made it to the playoffs five times in a row. In 2018 and 2024, they reached the finals but lost to Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively.
Many cricket experts used to think SRH was great at bowling and defending low scores. Now, they are known for their amazing batting. The team even holds the record for the highest score ever in an IPL match, with 287 runs! David Warner has scored the most runs for SRH. He won the Orange Cap (for the top run-scorer) three times. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken the most wickets for the team. He won the Purple Cap (for the top wicket-taker) twice.

Team's Beginning
Sunrisers Hyderabad took the place of the Deccan Chargers in 2012 and started playing in 2013. The SUN Group bought the team after the Deccan Chronicle company had money problems. The team was officially announced on December 18, 2012. Sun TV Network won the bid to own the team for five years.
The team's jersey was shown on March 8, 2013. The team song, made by G. V. Prakash Kumar, was released on March 12, 2013. The team's logo was revealed on December 20, 2012. Famous cricket players like Muttiah Muralitharan, Tom Moody, and V. V. S. Laxman have helped manage the team.
Team's Journey in IPL
2013–2015: Early Years
Sunrisers Hyderabad played their first IPL season in 2013. They kept 20 players from the old Deccan Chargers team. They also added new players like Thisara Perera and Darren Sammy. Kumar Sangakkara was the captain for most of the matches, and Cameron White led the team for the rest. In their first year, SRH reached the playoffs but lost to Rajasthan Royals. All their home games were played in Hyderabad.
For the 2014 season, only eight teams were in the league. SRH kept two players, Dale Steyn and Shikhar Dhawan. Shikhar Dhawan became the captain, with Darren Sammy as vice-captain. Some matches were played in the United Arab Emirates because of elections in India. The team finished 6th and did not make it to the playoffs.
In the 2015 season, SRH kept 13 players. David Warner was chosen as the captain for this season. Muttiah Muralitharan joined as the bowling coach and mentor. SRH played some home games in Visakhapatnam and the rest in Hyderabad. They finished 6th again and missed the playoffs. However, David Warner won the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs.
2016–2020: Winning the Title and Playoff Streak
For the 2016 season, SRH kept 15 players. Under David Warner's great leadership, Sunrisers Hyderabad won their first-ever IPL title! They beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. This was their only title win so far. Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the first SRH player to win the Purple Cap for taking the most wickets.
In the 2017 season, SRH kept most of their winning squad. As champions, they hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. The team finished 3rd in the points table. They lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in a playoff match. Bhuvneshwar Kumar won the Purple Cap again, and David Warner won the Orange Cap.
For the 2018 season, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals returned to the league. David Warner stepped down as captain due to a controversy. Kane Williamson from New Zealand became the new captain. SRH finished as runners-up, losing to Chennai Super Kings in the final. Williamson won the Orange Cap for scoring 735 runs.
Before the 2019 auction, SRH traded Shikhar Dhawan to Delhi Capitals. They kept 17 players. David Warner returned to the IPL. SRH decided to keep Kane Williamson as captain, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar as vice-captain. SRH finished the 2019 season with 6 wins and 9 losses. They lost to Delhi Capitals in a playoff match. David Warner won the Orange Cap again.
For the 2020 season, SRH kept 18 players. They brought in new coaches, Trevor Bayliss and Brad Haddin. David Warner became captain again. SRH finished their 2020 season with 8 wins and 8 losses. They beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the playoffs but then lost to Delhi Capitals.
2021–2023: Difficult Seasons
Before the 2021 auction, SRH kept 22 players. They added Tom Moody back to the team as Director of Cricket. After a tough start to the season, Kane Williamson took over as captain from David Warner.
Tom Moody became the head coach again for 2022. Dale Steyn joined as the fast bowling coach. Before the big auction, SRH kept Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik. They bought many new players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T. Natarajan, and Aiden Markram. Kane Williamson led the team in 2022. They finished 8th and did not make the playoffs.
SRH appointed Brian Lara as the head coach for the 2023 season. Aiden Markram became the new captain. SRH kept 12 players and released others, including former captain Kane Williamson. They bought new players like Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal. The team had a disappointing season, winning only 4 games and finishing 10th.
2024: A Strong Comeback
After the 2023 season, SRH announced Daniel Vettori as the new head coach. They traded Mayank Dagar for Shahbaz Ahmed. At the auction, SRH bought Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Wanindu Hasaranga. Pat Cummins was named the new captain for the 2024 season.
The team started the 2024 season with a close loss. On March 27, 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the IPL record for the highest team score by making 277 runs against Mumbai Indians! They won that game. They then had a great winning streak of four matches.
On April 15, 2024, SRH broke their own record! They scored an amazing 287 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru. This is the second-highest score in all T20 cricket history. Even though RCB scored 262 runs in reply (the highest score for a losing team), SRH still won by 25 runs.
SRH finished the league stage in second place, making it to the playoffs after four years. They played against Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 1 and lost. Then, they beat Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 to reach the finals. In the final, they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders again, finishing as runners-up for the 2024 season.

Team Rivalries
Rivalry with Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Sunrisers Hyderabad has a big rivalry with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This rivalry started with the old Hyderabad team, Deccan Chargers. Hyderabad teams have often done better in these matches. Deccan Chargers won 6 out of 11 games against RCB. Sunrisers Hyderabad currently leads with 13 wins compared to RCB's 11 wins.
The Hyderabad teams have often caused problems for RCB's chances in the IPL. Deccan Chargers won the 2009 Indian Premier League final against RCB. Sunrisers Hyderabad also beat RCB in the 2016 Indian Premier League final. In 2020, SRH knocked RCB out of the playoffs. Even in 2021, when SRH had a tough season, they beat RCB, which affected RCB's final standing. In 2022, SRH bowled RCB out for a very low score, which hurt RCB's run rate.
In the 2024 IPL, SRH broke the record for the highest IPL score (263 runs by RCB) not once, but twice! First, they scored 277 runs against Mumbai Indians. Then, in a match against RCB themselves, SRH scored an amazing 287 runs. This was thanks to fast scoring by Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen. Even though RCB fought hard and scored 262 runs, they still lost. This loss made it very hard for RCB to reach the playoffs. SRH also scored 266 against Delhi Capitals, breaking the 263 record a third time.
