Thisara Perera (born 3 April 1989) is a famous former cricket player from Sri Lanka. He played for the national team in all types of cricket games. He was also the captain for some of the shorter games.

Thisara is known as an all-rounder. This means he is good at both batting and bowling. He bats left-handed and can hit the ball very far, especially at the end of a game. He bowls right-arm medium-fast.

He was a key player when Sri Lanka won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament. He even hit the winning boundary in the final game! In 2016, he made history by taking a hat-trick in both One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. Only one other player had done this before him.

People in Australia sometimes call him "Panda." This nickname was given to him by another cricketer, George Bailey. However, Thisara prefers to be called "TP." In 2021, Thisara became the first Sri Lankan to hit six sixes in a single over during a domestic game.

On 3 May 2021, Thisara Perera announced that he was retiring from playing international cricket. However, he said he would keep playing cricket for local teams and in special leagues around the world.

Starting His Cricket Journey

Thisara Perera began playing cricket when he was a teenager. He first played at St. Anthony's College, Wattala. Later, he went to the well-known St. Joseph's College in Colombo. This school has produced many famous Sri Lankan cricketers.

He played for Sri Lanka's youth teams at different levels. He was even chosen for the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In November 2008, he played his first big professional game for the Colts Cricket Club. He took many wickets for the Sri Lanka under-19 team.

Thisara Perera played his first international game for Sri Lanka in December 2009. It was an ODI match against India. In August 2010, he took five wickets in an ODI against India. This amazing performance earned him the "player of the match" award.

He was part of the Sri Lankan team in the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Sri Lanka reached the final but lost to India. Thisara scored 22 runs quickly and took a key wicket in that game. In 2012, he took six wickets against Pakistan in an ODI. This was his best bowling performance ever. He also took a hat-trick against Pakistan in the same series.

On 5 January 2019, Thisara scored his first century (100 runs) in an ODI game. He made 140 runs from only 74 balls against New Zealand. This was the fastest century ever scored against New Zealand in an ODI. He also hit thirteen sixes in that game. This is the most sixes a Sri Lankan batsman has hit in an ODI.

Test Match Experience

Thisara was chosen for Sri Lanka's Test team to play against England. He made his Test debut in May 2011. He scored some runs but did not take any wickets in that game.

Later, he played in three Test matches during a tour of South Africa. In these games, he scored 81 runs and took five wickets.

In May 2010, Thisara played his first Twenty20 International (T20I) game. He represented Sri Lanka in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 tournament. In October 2010, he helped Sri Lanka beat Australia in a T20I game in Australia for the first time.

Thisara was a big part of the team that won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 championship. This was Sri Lanka's first T20I World Cup title. In the final against India, he had an important partnership with Kumar Sangakkara. He hit the winning boundary to secure the victory.

On 12 February 2016, he took a hat-trick in a T20I game against India. This was the first T20I hat-trick by a Sri Lankan player.

In August 2017, he was chosen to play for a special "World XI" team. This team played three T20I matches against Pakistan. In one game, Thisara took two wickets and scored 47 runs very quickly. He hit five big sixes and won the "man of the match" award for his great all-round performance.

Leading the Team

In October 2017, Thisara Perera was named captain for Sri Lanka's T20I series against Pakistan. This happened because the regular captain decided not to play due to security concerns.

Later, in November 2017, Thisara was also made captain for the ODI and T20I matches against India. This change happened because the team had not been playing well under the previous captain.

His first ODI as captain was against India. Sri Lanka won that match comfortably by 7 wickets. This win ended Sri Lanka's streak of 12 ODI losses. However, Sri Lanka lost the ODI series 1–2 and the T20I series 0–3.

After Being Captain

In May 2018, Thisara was given a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket. This meant he would continue to play for the national team.

During an ODI series against New Zealand in 2019, Thisara showed his amazing batting skills. In the second ODI, he scored his first ODI century. He made 140 runs from just 74 balls. He hit 13 sixes in this innings, which was a new record for Sri Lanka. Even though Sri Lanka lost the match, Thisara was named "man of the match" for his incredible performance.

In April 2019, he was chosen for Sri Lanka's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said he was a key player for Sri Lanka in the tournament.

Retiring from International Cricket

On 3 May 2021, Thisara Perera announced that he was retiring from all international cricket games. Reports suggested this was due to disagreements with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. There were also talks about the board wanting to give more chances to younger players.
