International Cricket Career
Making His Mark
Mathews started his international career in late 2008. He wanted to be a true all-rounder, good at both batting and bowling. Over time, he focused more on his batting to avoid injuries. However, he still bowls in limited-overs games to help balance the team.
He played his first One Day International (ODI) against Zimbabwe in November 2008. His Test debut was against Pakistan in July 2009.

Mathews scored his first half-century in his third Test match. His first century came against Australia in September 2011. He has shown great performance in countries like England and the UAE. In February 2013, at 25, he became Sri Lanka's youngest Test captain. He led the team to a big Test series win in England in 2014. His highest Test score is 200 not out, which he made against Zimbabwe in 2020.
Leading the Team (2013–2017)
After Kumar Sangakkara stepped down, Mathews became the captain for ODIs and Tests in February 2013. He also became the T20I captain in 2012.
In November 2010, Mathews scored an amazing 77 not out against Australia. He had a record-breaking 132-run partnership with Lasith Malinga for the ninth wicket in that match.
Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka made history by winning their first-ever Test series in England. They also won the ODI series 3-2. In 2014, Mathews led Sri Lanka to win the 2014 Asia Cup. That year, he was the most successful ODI captain, winning 20 out of 32 matches. The ICC even named him captain of the World Test XI for his great performance in 2014.
In the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Mathews scored the fastest fifty by a Sri Lankan in World Cups. He reached his fifty in just 20 balls against Scotland. He led the team to the quarter-finals, but they lost to South Africa.
Mathews became the fourth Sri Lankan all-rounder to take 100 ODI wickets and score over 3000 ODI runs. He joined legends like Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan. In August 2016, under his captaincy, Sri Lanka beat Australia 3-0 in a Test series. This was a big achievement, as Australia was the number one Test team.
In July 2017, Sri Lanka lost an ODI series at home to Zimbabwe. Mathews called it "one of the lowest points" in his career. The next day, he stepped down as captain in all three formats.
After Captaincy (2017)
In December 2017, Mathews scored his eighth Test century against India. He also scored his second ODI century against India in the same month.
Second Time as Captain (2018)
In January 2018, Mathews was asked to be captain again for ODIs and T20Is. This was less than six months after he had stepped down. However, he faced more injury problems and had to miss several matches. In September 2018, he was removed as captain after a tough 2018 Asia Cup where Sri Lanka lost both their group matches.
As a Key Batsman (2018-Present)
In late 2018, during a Test against New Zealand, Mathews and Kusal Mendis batted for an entire day. Their partnership of 246 runs was Sri Lanka's highest for any wicket against New Zealand. It was also Sri Lanka's highest in the second innings of a Test outside Asia.
In April 2019, he was part of Sri Lanka's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. After a slow start, he scored an unbeaten 85 runs against England, helping Sri Lanka win the match. During that game, he reached 12,000 international runs. In a surprising moment against West Indies, he bowled the 48th over and took a crucial wicket. He scored his third ODI century against India in the same tournament.
In January 2020, Mathews made his first T20I appearance in 16 months against India. On 22 January 2020, he scored his first double century in Test cricket against Zimbabwe, making 200 not out. Sri Lanka won the match, and Mathews was named Man of the Match. He also won the Player of the Series award.
In March 2020, he bowled a match-winning spell against West Indies in an ODI, taking 4 wickets. In January 2021, during England's tour of Sri Lanka, Mathews reached 6000 Test runs. He also scored his 11th Test century in the second match.
Considering Retirement (2021)
In July 2021, Mathews thought about retiring from international cricket. This was because of disagreements with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board about player contracts and the team's future plans.
Timed Out Dismissal (2023)
On 6 November 2023, during a World Cup match against Bangladesh, Angelo Mathews was given out for being "timed out." This means he took too long to be ready to face his first ball after a wicket fell. He was trying to fix his helmet strap, which broke, and needed a new helmet. The rules state a new batter must be ready within two minutes. Mathews became the first player in international cricket history to be dismissed this way. This decision caused a lot of discussion among cricket fans and players.
Recent Performances (2021-Present)
In February 2021, Mathews briefly captained Sri Lanka in a T20I series in the West Indies. In May 2022, he scored 199 runs in a Test match against Bangladesh, just missing a double century. He then scored his 13th Test century in the next match. He was named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for May 2022, the first Sri Lankan to receive this award.
In July 2022, Mathews played his 100th Test match against Pakistan. In March 2023, he became the third Sri Lankan cricketer to complete 7000 Test runs. He also completed 14,000 international runs across all formats. He scored his 14th Test century against New Zealand. In May 2023, he scored his 15th Test century against Ireland.
In January 2024, Mathews had great all-round performances in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, helping Sri Lanka win the series. He was named Player of the Series. In February 2024, he scored his 16th Test century against Afghanistan, sharing a big partnership with Dinesh Chandimal. This century put him among the top Sri Lankan century makers.
In May 2024, he was chosen for Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. In a recent Test series against New Zealand, he scored a fifty and an 88, helping Sri Lanka win both matches.

Angelo Mathews is also involved in social work. In July 2021, he showed interest in helping "Little Hearts." This project raises money to build a special hospital complex for children with heart problems at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo.
