Shakib Al Hasan (Bengali: সাকিব আল হাসান, romanized: Sākiba āla hāsāna; born 24 March 1987) is a famous Bangladeshi cricketer. He plays Test and ODI matches for the Bangladeshi cricket team. He was also a member of the Bangladesh Parliament for a short time.

Shakib is known for his strong left-handed batting and his clever spin bowling. Many people think he is the best Bangladeshi sportsman ever and one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history. An all-rounder is a player who is good at both batting and bowling.

He started playing Test matches in 2007 against India. A big moment for him was in 2008 when he took 7 wickets for only 36 runs against New Zealand. This was the best bowling performance by a Bangladeshi player at that time. He has scored over 4,000 runs and taken more than 200 wickets in Test cricket. He even led his team to their first Test win against England in 2016.

In ODI matches, Shakib has been even more successful. He has scored over 6,000 runs and taken more than 270 wickets. He is the fastest and only player to reach 5,000 runs and 250 wickets in ODIs. In the 2012 Asia Cup, he scored 237 runs and took six wickets, helping Bangladesh reach the final for the first time. He was named Player of the Tournament. He also played a huge role in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, scoring 606 runs and breaking a record for most runs in the group stages.

Shakib has played for many T20 teams around the world, like Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He won the Indian Premier League (IPL) twice with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014. He also won the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) three times. He has won a record four Player of the Tournament awards in the BPL. He has won 41 "man-of-the-match" awards, which is the most for Bangladesh. Between 2009 and 2022, he was the captain of the Bangladesh cricket team in 120 matches.

Shakib Al Hasan is a very important player for the Bangladesh cricket team. He is also one of the most famous people in Bangladesh. In 2019, ESPN ranked him as the 90th most famous athlete in the world. He was also part of the ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year twice (2009, 2021). As of July 2024, Shakib has the third-most wickets in men's T20 International matches.

Early Life and Youth Cricket

Shakib was born in Magura, Khulna, Bangladesh, on March 24, 1987. He started playing cricket when he was very young. People noticed he was good at batting and bowling. He even tried spin bowling, which he became famous for later.

He trained at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan, a special sports institute run by the government.

First Matches

Shakib played his first Under-17 match in 2003. In May 2004, at age 17, he played his first first-class match for Khulna Division. This is a longer form of cricket.

In November 2005, Shakib played for Bangladesh at the Under-19 level. In one match, he scored 82 runs and helped Bangladesh win against England. In another final, he scored a century (100 runs) and took three wickets, leading his team to victory.

In January 2005, he played his first first-class international match. In February 2005, he took his first five-wicket haul (taking 5 wickets in one innings) in a first-class match.

Playing for Teams Around the World

Shakib has played for many different cricket teams in various leagues across the world.

National Cricket League (NCL)

Since 2004, Shakib has played for Khulna Division in the National Cricket League in Bangladesh. He has scored 930 runs and taken 31 wickets in 14 matches in this league.

English County Cricket (ECC)

In July 2010, Shakib joined Worcestershire in England. He was the first Bangladeshi player to play for a county team. He took his best first-class bowling figures of 7 wickets for 32 runs against Middlesex. He helped Worcestershire get promoted to the top division.

He also played for Leicestershire in 2013 for their T20 campaign.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

Shakib joined Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2011 Indian Premier League for a large sum of money. He helped his team win the IPL title twice, in 2012 and 2014. In 2014, his all-round performance (scoring runs and taking wickets) was very important for their win.

Later, he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018. In May 2018, he became the second T20 player ever to take 300 wickets and score 4,000 runs.

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)

In 2012, Shakib was chosen as an 'icon player' for the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He was named Man of the Tournament in 2012 and 2013. He has won this award a record four times in total.

He played for Dhaka Dynamites and led them to win the title in 2016. In 2019, he became the first player in BPL history to take 100 wickets. He also took the most wickets in a single BPL season that year.

In 2022, he won the Player of the Tournament award for the fourth time. For the 2024 BPL, he was the highest-paid local player. He is the highest wicket-taker in the BPL with 132 wickets.

Other Leagues

Shakib has also played in other T20 leagues around the world:

  • Caribbean Premier League (CPL): He played for Barbados Tridents and Jamaica Tallawahs. In 2013, he took an amazing 6 wickets for only 6 runs, which was one of the best bowling figures in T20 cricket. He won the CPL title with Barbados Tridents in 2019.
  • Big Bash League (BBL): He became the first Bangladeshi to play in the Big Bash League in Australia in 2014, playing for Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades.
  • Pakistan Super League (PSL): He played for Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi.
  • Lanka Premier League (LPL): He played for Galle Marvels in 2023.

Starting His International Career

Shakib made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Zimbabwe on August 6, 2006. He scored 30 runs and took his first ODI wicket.

He played his first T20 International (T20I) match on November 28, 2006, also against Zimbabwe. His Test debut was on May 6, 2007, against India.

In October 2008, he took 7 wickets for 36 runs against New Zealand, which was the best bowling by a Bangladeshi player in Tests at that time.

Becoming a Top All-Rounder

From 2009 to 2011, and again from 2012 to 2013, Shakib was ranked as the number one ODI all-rounder by the ICC. In December 2011, he became the top-ranked Test all-rounder. By December 2014, he was also the top-ranked T20 all-rounder. This means he was the only player to be ranked in the top 3 all-rounders in all three types of international cricket!

Leading the Team

In June 2009, Shakib became the vice-captain of Bangladesh. When the captain, Mashrafe Mortaza, got injured, Shakib took over as captain. He was only 22 years old. Under his leadership, Bangladesh won their first ever overseas Test series against the West Indies. He was named player of the series for his great performance.

He also led Bangladesh to a 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe in 2009. In one match, he scored 104 runs off just 64 balls.

In July 2010, Shakib stepped down from captaincy to focus on his own game. But he was asked to lead again when the captain got injured.

World Cup Performances

Shakib played in the 2011 Cricket World Cup which Bangladesh co-hosted. He was the team's top wicket-taker and third-highest run-scorer.

In the 2019 Cricket World Cup, he was named vice-captain. In the first match against South Africa, he became the fastest player to reach 5,000 runs and 250 wickets in ODIs. He was named man of the match. He also became the first Bangladeshi to score 1,000 runs in the Cricket World Cup. In a match against Afghanistan, he became the second player ever to score 50 runs and take five wickets in a World Cup match.

He finished the 2019 World Cup as Bangladesh's top run-scorer with 606 runs and took 11 wickets. He was named in the 'Team of the Tournament'.

Recent Years

After a break, Shakib returned to the national team in 2021. He became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to bowl 100 innings at home. He also became the only cricketer to achieve 6,000 runs and 300 wickets in all formats in Bangladesh.

In March 2023, he became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take 300 wickets in One Day Internationals. He also became the leading wicket-taker in T20Is.

Disciplinary Moments

Shakib's career has had some challenging moments.

  • In 2010, he was warned for reacting strongly to a disturbance near the field during a match.
  • In 2014, he faced a temporary ban from cricket due to an "attitude problem" and for leaving to play in a foreign league without proper permission. This ban was later reduced.
  • In 2018, during a tense match against Sri Lanka, he showed frustration with umpiring decisions. He was fined and given a demerit point by the ICC.
  • In 2019, he led a players' strike to ask for better pay and conditions for cricketers in Bangladesh. The issues were resolved after discussions with the cricket board.
  • In 2019, he was suspended for one year by the International Cricket Council for not reporting approaches from bookmakers. He was able to play international cricket again from October 2020.
  • In 2021, during a domestic match, he showed frustration with an umpire's decision by kicking and uprooting the stumps. He later apologized and was suspended for three matches and fined.
  • In 2022, he stated he was not mentally or physically ready to play in a series against South Africa, which caused some discussion about his commitment. He later agreed to play.

Personal Life

Shakib studied at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) and earned a degree in Business Administration from American International University-Bangladesh.

He is married to Umme Ahmed Shishir. They met in England in 2010. They have three children: two daughters, Alayna Aubrey Hasan and Errum Hasan, and a son, Eyzah Al Hasan.

Shakib is also a businessman and has been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in Bangladesh.

Politics

Shakib joined the ruling Awami League political party in 2023. He ran for election in his home area of Magura-1 and won, becoming a member of Parliament in January 2024.

However, he lost this position in August 2024 when the Parliament was dissolved.

Helping Others

Shakib runs a charity called SAHF (Shakib Al Hasan Foundation) to help people. In March 2020, his foundation started 'Mission Save Bangladesh' to help families during difficult times. In April 2020, he even auctioned his bat from the 2019 Cricket World Cup to raise money for COVID-19 relief efforts.
