Shakib Al Hasan (Bengali: সাকিব আল হাসান; born 24 March 1987) is a famous former Bangladeshi international cricketer. He played Test, ODI, and T20I matches for the Bangladeshi cricket team. He was also a Member of Parliament for Magura-1.

Shakib is known for his powerful left-handed batting in the middle of the game. He is also famous for his controlled slow left-arm orthodox bowling. He has led the Bangladesh national cricket team as captain in all three types of cricket. Many people consider him one of the greatest all-rounders of all time. ESPN even ranked him among the world's most famous athletes in 2019.

Shakib Al Hasan started his Test career in 2007 against India. A big moment for him was in 2008 against New Zealand in Chittagong. He took 7 wickets for only 36 runs, which was the best bowling record for a Bangladeshi player at that time. He quickly became one of the team's top players. He has scored over 4,000 runs and taken more than 200 wickets in Test matches. He also led the team to their first-ever Test win against England in 2016.

In ODIs, Shakib has been even more successful. He has scored over 6,000 runs and taken more than 270 wickets. He was the fastest player to reach 5,000 runs and 250 wickets in ODIs. In the 2012 Asia Cup, Shakib scored 237 runs and took six wickets. Bangladesh reached the final for the first time but lost to Pakistan. Shakib was named the Player of the Tournament. He was also a key player in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. He scored 606 runs, breaking the record for most runs in the group stages.

Shakib has played for many T20 teams around the world. These include Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Jamaica Tallawahs. He won the Indian Premier League (IPL) twice with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014. He also won the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) three times with Dhaka Dominators. He has been named the Player of the Tournament in BPL a record four times. He has won many "man-of-the-match" and "man-of-the-series" awards. Between 2009 and 2022, he captained the Bangladesh team in 120 matches.

Shakib Al Hasan is a very important player for the Bangladesh cricket team. He has performed consistently for his country for many years. He is one of the most influential people in Bangladesh. He was part of the ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year twice (2009, 2021). As of July 2024, Shakib holds the record for the 3rd most men's T20 International wickets.

Early Life and Youth Cricket

Shakib was born in Magura, Khulna, and started playing cricket when he was very young. He was known for his strong batting and fast bowling. He also tried spin bowling.

He trained for six months at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan, a government sports school. Shakib played his first Under-17 match in 2003. He took 3 wickets for 18 runs in that game.

In May 2004, at age 17, Shakib played his first professional cricket match for Khulna Division. He took 3 wickets in one of the innings.

Shakib first played for Bangladesh at the Under-19 level in November 2005. In his first match, he scored 24 runs and took 2 wickets. He played 5 matches in that tournament, scoring 138 runs and taking 5 wickets. In another Under-19 tournament, he scored 82 runs against England. In the final of a tri-nation tournament, Shakib scored a century and took three wickets, leading his team to victory.

Playing for Different Teams

Shakib has played for many different cricket teams around the world.

National Cricket League (NCL)

Since 2004, Shakib has played for Khulna in the National Cricket League in Bangladesh. In his first season (2004–05), he scored 129 runs and took 16 wickets in just 3 matches. Overall, he has scored 930 runs and taken 31 wickets in 14 NCL matches.

English County Cricket (ECC)

In July 2010, Shakib joined Worcestershire in England. He was the first Bangladeshi player to join a county team. While playing for Worcestershire, he took his best bowling figures of 7 wickets for 32 runs. He helped Worcestershire get promoted to the first division. He also played for Surrey for one match.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

Shakib joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2011 for the Indian Premier League. He took 11 wickets in seven matches in his first season. In 2012, KKR won their first IPL title, and Shakib played an important role. In 2014, KKR won the IPL again, and Shakib's all-round performance was key. He scored 227 runs and took 11 wickets that season.

He later played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018. In May 2018, he became the second T20 player to take 300 wickets and score 4,000 runs. He returned to KKR in 2021.

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)

The Bangladesh Premier League started in 2012. Shakib was chosen as an 'icon player' for Khulna Royal Bengals. He scored 280 runs and took 15 wickets, earning him the "Man of the Tournament" award.

In 2013, he joined Dhaka Gladiators and led them to win the title. He was again named "Man of the Tournament." He has won this award a record four times (2012, 2013, 2018, 2022). He is the highest wicket-taker in BPL history with 132 wickets.

Caribbean Premier League (CPL)

Shakib played for Barbados Tridents in the 2013 Caribbean Premier League. In one match, he took an amazing 6 wickets for only 6 runs. He also played for Jamaica Tallawahs. In 2019, he won the CPL title with Barbados Tridents.

Other Leagues

Shakib also played in the Big Bash League in Australia for Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades. He was the first Bangladeshi to play in this league. He also played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi. In 2023, he played for Galle Marvels in the Lanka Premier League.

International Career

Early Days and Breakthrough

Shakib made his first international appearance in a One Day International (ODI) match against Zimbabwe on 6 August 2006. He scored 30 runs and took his first ODI wicket. He made his T20 International (T20I) debut against Zimbabwe in November 2006.

His Test debut was on 6 May 2007 against India. His first Test wicket was Craig Cumming in a match against New Zealand. In October 2008, he took 7 wickets for 36 runs against New Zealand, which was a record for Bangladesh at the time.

Shakib quickly became known as a top all-rounder. From 2009 to 2011, and again from 2012 to 2013, he was ranked the number one ODI all-rounder by the ICC. In 2011, he became the world's top-ranked Test all-rounder. In 2014, he became the top-ranked T20 all-rounder. He is the only all-rounder to be ranked in the top 3 in all three formats of international cricket.

Shakib became Bangladesh's vice-captain in June 2009. When the captain, Mashrafe Mortaza, got injured during a tour of the West Indies, Shakib took over as captain. He was only 22 years old. Under his leadership, Bangladesh won their first-ever overseas series. This success meant he continued as captain.

In July 2010, Shakib stepped down from the ODI captaincy to focus on his own game. However, he was asked to lead again when Mortaza got injured. He was captain during the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

In October 2010, New Zealand visited Bangladesh. Shakib led the team to a 4–0 series victory, which was Bangladesh's first series win against a strong international team. He was the top scorer and wicket-taker in that series.

After Captaincy

After the 2011 World Cup, Shakib was removed from captaincy. However, he continued to perform well. In December 2011, he became the first Bangladeshi player to score a century (144 runs) and take five wickets in the same Test match against Pakistan. He then became the top-ranked Test all-rounder.

In 2014, Shakib made history by becoming only the fourth player in Test history to score a century and take 10 wickets in the same match. This happened during a match against Zimbabwe.

In 2015, Shakib helped Bangladesh have a very successful year. They won series against Pakistan, India, and South Africa. He took his 100th Test wicket at home and his 200th ODI wicket, becoming the fastest player to reach 4,000 runs and 200 wickets in ODIs.

In 2016, Shakib became Bangladesh's leading wicket-taker in ODIs and across all formats. He also became the first Bangladeshi to take 150 Test wickets.

Return to Captaincy

After Mashrafe Mortaza retired from T20I cricket in 2017, Shakib was again made the T20I captain. He also became the Test captain again. In August 2017, he became the fourth bowler in Test history to take a 5-wicket haul against all Test-playing nations. He also took his first 10-wicket haul in a Test match, leading Bangladesh to a win against Australia.

In November 2018, he became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take 200 wickets in Tests. He also became the fastest cricketer to score 3,000 runs and take 200 wickets in Tests.

2019 Cricket World Cup Highlights

In April 2019, Shakib was named vice-captain for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In Bangladesh's first match against South Africa, he scored 50 runs and took his 250th ODI wicket. He became the fastest cricketer to reach 5,000 runs and 250 wickets in ODIs. He was named player of the match.

In the match against West Indies, Shakib scored an unbeaten 124 runs and was again named man of the match. On 24 June 2019, against Afghanistan, he became the first Bangladeshi batsman to score 1,000 runs in the Cricket World Cup. He also took a five-wicket haul in a World Cup match, becoming only the second player to score 50 runs and take five wickets in the same World Cup match.

Shakib finished the 2019 World Cup as Bangladesh's top run-scorer with 606 runs in eight matches. He also took 11 wickets. He was named in the 'Team of the Tournament' by the ICC.

Recent Career (2021-2024)

After a one-year ban, Shakib returned to the national team in 2021. In an ODI series against West Indies, he became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to bowl in 100 innings at home. He also became the only cricketer to achieve 6,000 runs and 300 wickets in all formats in a single country (Bangladesh). He was named Player of the Series.

In July 2021, he was named the ICC Player of the Month. In 2022, he was included in the ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year. In March 2023, he became the first Bangladeshi bowler and 14th overall to take 300 wickets in One Day Internationals. He also became the leading wicket-taker in T20Is.

Shakib was Bangladesh's ODI Captain for the Asia Cup and 2023 Cricket World Cup. In May 2024, he was named in Bangladesh's squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. On 26 September 2024, Shakib announced his retirement from T20Is. He also confirmed that he would retire from international cricket after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Personal Life

Shakib studied at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) and earned a degree in Business Administration from American International University-Bangladesh.

He married Umme Ahmed Shishir on 12 December 2012. They met in England when Shakib was playing cricket there. They have three children: two daughters, Alayna Aubrey Hasan (born 2015) and Errum Hasan (born 2020), and one son, Eyzah Al Hasan (born 2021).

Shakib is the chairman of Monarch Holdings and has been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in Bangladesh, Huawei, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (Bangladesh). He also started a charity called SAHF (Shakib Al Hasan Foundation) in 2020 to help people. In April 2020, he auctioned his 2019 Cricket World Cup bat to raise money for COVID-19 relief.

Politics

In 2023, Shakib joined the ruling Awami League party. He successfully ran for election in the 2024 Bangladeshi general election and became a Member of Parliament for Magura-1. However, his time as a Member of Parliament ended in August 2024 when the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) was dissolved.

Test Captaincy

Shakib led Bangladesh to their first away Test win against West Indies in 2009. He also led them to win the series, earning him the Player of the Series award. He also captained Bangladesh to a 2–0 Test series win against West Indies in 2018–19.

ODI Captaincy

Bangladesh played 62 ODI matches under Shakib's captaincy from 2009 to 2015 and in 2023, winning 27 of them. He captained Bangladesh in the 2011 Cricket World Cup and 2023 Cricket World Cup.

T20I Captaincy
