Virat Kohli (born 5 November 1988) is a famous Indian cricketer. He used to be the captain of the Indian national cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman and sometimes bowls medium-fast.

Currently, he plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. He also plays for Delhi in Indian cricket. Many people think Kohli is one of the best batsmen ever.

He holds the record for the most centuries in ODI cricket. He is also second in the list of most international centuries. Kohli has scored the most runs in the IPL.

Kohli was part of the Indian team that won the 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, 2024 T20 World Cup, and 2025 Champions Trophy. He also led India to be the top Test team three times in a row (2017, 2018, and 2019).

In 2013, Kohli was ranked number one among ODI batsmen. By 2018, he was the top Test batsman too. This made him the only Indian player to be number one in all three types of cricket. He grew up in Uttam Nagar and went to Vishal Bharti Public School. His family says he loved cricket from age three. He would ask his father to bowl to him.

In 1998, his father enrolled him in the West Delhi Cricket Academy. This was because neighbors thought his skills were too good for casual street cricket. He later joined the U-15 Delhi team.

Kohli started his junior cricket career in October 2002. He played against Himachal Pradesh. He scored his first half-century (70 runs) at Feroze Shah Kotla. He was the top scorer for his team that season.

In the 2003–04 season, Kohli became the captain of the U-15 team. He scored his first century (119 runs) against Jammu and Kashmir. He ended that season with 390 runs and two centuries.

IPL Career Highlights

Early Years (2008–2012)

In 2007, the Indian Premier League (IPL) started. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) picked Kohli for their team in 2008. This was because of his great performance in the U-19 World Cup.

In his first IPL match, he scored only one run. He mostly batted in the middle order. In the first season, he scored 165 runs. RCB finished seventh.

In the next season, he struggled at first but then scored a half-century. RCB reached the final but lost by 8 runs.
