History of Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Early Years (2008–2010)
In 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a new Twenty20 cricket competition called the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was set to begin in 2008. In January 2008, teams for eight Indian cities were chosen. The Bengaluru team was bought by Vijay Mallya. It was the second most expensive team at the time.
Before the first player auction, Rahul Dravid was chosen as the special "icon player" for Bengaluru. This meant he would earn more than other top players. The team signed many famous players like Jacques Kallis, Anil Kumble, and Virat Kohli. Dravid was named captain, and Venkatesh Prasad became the coach.
The team had a tough first season in 2008. They won only four out of 14 matches. They finished seventh out of eight teams. There were some challenges with player selection early on.
In 2009, the IPL tournament was held in South Africa due to elections in India. RCB signed Kevin Pietersen for a record amount. Anil Kumble took over as captain later in the season. Under Kumble, RCB played much better. They won six of their last eight matches. They reached the final but lost to the Deccan Chargers.
In 2010, with Kumble still as captain, RCB won seven matches. They made it to the semi-finals. They lost to the Mumbai Indians but then won the third-place playoff. This allowed them to play in the 2010 Champions League Twenty20. Kumble retired after this successful year.
Reaching Finals (2011–2012)
In 2011, teams could keep up to four players. RCB only kept Virat Kohli. They bought new stars like Tillakaratne Dilshan, AB de Villiers, and Daniel Vettori. Vettori became the captain.
The team started well but then lost a few games. Chris Gayle joined the team due to an injury to another player. Gayle's arrival changed everything! RCB went on a seven-match winning streak. They finished first in the league table. However, they lost the final to the Chennai Super Kings. Chris Gayle was named the best player of the tournament. RCB also reached the semi-finals of the 2011 Champions League Twenty20. They made it to the final but lost to the Mumbai Indians.
In 2012, RCB kept Chris Gayle. They won eight of their sixteen games. But they did not make it to the playoffs. Chris Gayle was again the top scorer in the tournament. He scored 733 runs, including a century.
Kohli's Captaincy and Key Players (2013–2015)
In 2013, Virat Kohli became the new captain, taking over from Daniel Vettori. He remained captain until 2021. RCB finished fifth in the league stage. They missed out on the playoffs. Chris Gayle was the second-highest run-scorer. Vinay Kumar was the team's top wicket-taker.
For the 2014 season, RCB kept AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, and Virat Kohli. They bought other strong players like Yuvraj Singh. The team finished seventh and did not qualify for the playoffs. De Villiers was the top scorer for the team.
In 2015, RCB made it to the playoffs. They beat Rajasthan Royals in one playoff match. But they lost to Chennai Super Kings in the next game. This knocked them out of the tournament. AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, and Chris Gayle were among the top run-scorers. Yuzvendra Chahal was the team's best wicket-taker.
Ups and Downs (2016–2019)
The team saw changes in its leadership during this period. In 2016, RCB got new players like Shane Watson. They had a tough start to the season. But they made an amazing comeback, winning many games. They even set a record for the biggest win margin in IPL history!
RCB finished second in the group stage. They won their playoff match against Gujarat Lions. This sent them to their third IPL final. In the final, they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by a small margin. Virat Kohli had an incredible season. He won the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs (973), an IPL record!
The 2017 season was challenging for RCB. Key players like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers missed some early matches due to injuries. The team finished last in the table. In one match, RCB was bowled out for just 49 runs, the lowest score ever in an IPL match.
In 2018, RCB kept Kohli, de Villiers, and Sarfaraz Khan. They signed players like Brendon McCullum and Umesh Yadav. The team finished sixth and did not make the playoffs. Virat Kohli was the top run-scorer.
In 2019, Gary Kirsten became the head coach. The team finished last in the table again. Virat Kohli was the highest run-scorer, and Yuzvendra Chahal took the most wickets.
Finding Their Form Again (2020–2023)
In 2019, Simon Katich became the head coach, and Mike Hesson became the director of cricket. The 2020 IPL season was held in the UAE because of the COVID-19 pandemic. RCB played well and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2016. They finished fourth but lost in the Eliminator match. Devdutt Padikkal was the team's top run-scorer.
In 2021, RCB acquired Glenn Maxwell and Kyle Jamieson. The season was paused due to COVID-19 cases and later continued in the UAE. Mike Hesson took over as head coach. RCB qualified for the playoffs again, finishing third. But they lost in the Eliminator. Harshal Patel had a fantastic season, taking 32 wickets and winning the Purple Cap. Virat Kohli became the first player to score 6,000 runs in the IPL. This was also AB de Villiers's last season before he retired.
In 2022, Faf du Plessis became the new captain after Virat Kohli stepped down. Sanjay Bangar was appointed as the new head coach. The league expanded to 10 teams. RCB made it past the Eliminator stage. However, they lost to Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2. Du Plessis was the team's top run-scorer.
In 2023, RCB finished sixth in the group stage and missed the playoffs. Faf du Plessis was again the top run-scorer. Mohammed Siraj took the most wickets for the team.
IPL Champions (2024–Present)
In the 2024 season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru had a tough start. They lost 7 of their first 8 games. But they made an incredible comeback! They won their next six matches to qualify for the playoffs. They lost to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator. Virat Kohli won the Orange Cap for scoring 741 runs.
On June 3, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, RCB made history! They won their first-ever IPL title. They defeated the Punjab Kings by six runs in a thrilling final. Virat Kohli was the top scorer for RCB in that match. This victory ended an 18-year wait for the team and its loyal fans.
RCB entered the 2026 season as defending champions. They kept most of their winning squad. They had another fantastic season, winning 9 league matches and finishing at the top of the table. They went on to beat Gujarat Titans in both Qualifier 1 and the final. This meant they retained their title, becoming only the third team to win back-to-back IPL trophies!
Team Ownership Changes
Early Ownership (2008–2026)
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru team started in 2008. Vijay Mallya bought the team through his company, United Breweries Group. It cost $111.6 million, making it the second most expensive team in the first IPL season.
Between 2013 and 2016, a British company called Diageo took control of United Spirits. This meant Diageo became the main owner of RCB. In 2023, the team also bought the RCB Women's team for the WPL.
New Owners and Record Value (2026–Present)
In March 2026, United Spirits sold the entire Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited to a group of four companies. This deal was worth about $1.78 billion. It was the highest amount ever paid for a cricket team!
This big sale included:
- The Royal Challengers Bengaluru men's team.
- The Royal Challengers Bengaluru women's team.
- All the team's brand names and related businesses.
The new owners are:
- Aditya Birla Group: A large Indian company.
- The Times Group: A major media company in India.
- Bolt Ventures: Owned by David Blitzer.
- Blackstone: A big investment firm.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially approved this deal in March 2026.
Team Identity and Look
Team Name
Vijay Mallya wanted to connect one of his popular brands with the team. He chose "Royal Challenge," which gave the team its name.
Team Logo
The first logo had a yellow "RC" symbol on a red circle. A roaring lion with a crown, from the "Royal Challenge" brand, was at the top. The logo changed slightly in 2009, with gold replacing yellow.
In 2016, the logo was redesigned. Black was added as a new color. The lion became bigger, and the shield was removed. In 2020, a new logo was revealed with an even bigger lion and the crown returning. The "RC" symbol was removed from this design. In 2024, the logo changed again when the team's name became Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Team Ambassadors
Many famous people have been ambassadors for the team. Katrina Kaif was the first in 2008. Later, stars like Deepika Padukone, Ramya, Puneeth Rajkumar, Shiva Rajkumar, Upendra, and Ganesh also supported the team.
Kit Suppliers and Sponsors
The team's uniforms have been made by different companies over the years. Reebok made them from 2008 to 2014, then Adidas in 2015. Zeven, Wrogn, and Puma have also been kit manufacturers. The front and back of the jerseys also feature different sponsors.

Exciting Rivalries
Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs. Kolkata Knight Riders
The matches between RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are always thrilling! Their very first IPL match in 2008 saw KKR win big, thanks to an amazing 158 runs by Brendon McCullum.
In 2009, RCB won both their games against KKR. Ross Taylor scored a fantastic 81 runs in one of those wins. In 2012, KKR's captain Gautam Gambhir played brilliantly against RCB twice.
A rain-shortened match in 2015 was very exciting. KKR's Andre Russell scored quickly. Then, Mandeep Singh played a super innings for RCB, hitting 45 runs off just 18 balls.
In 2017, KKR bowled out RCB for only 49 runs, the lowest score in IPL history! Later that season, Sunil Narine scored a very fast fifty for KKR.
The 2019 season had two memorable games. In one, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers scored big for RCB. But then, Andre Russell hit 48 runs off just 13 balls to win it for KKR! In their next match, Kohli scored his fifth IPL century, and RCB won by 10 runs.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs. Chennai Super Kings
This rivalry is known as the "Southern Derby" because both teams are from southern India. In the 2011 IPL final, Chennai Super Kings beat RCB.
For many years, Chennai Super Kings had the upper hand. They won most of their matches against RCB from 2012 to 2023.
However, things changed in 2024 and 2025! In 2024, RCB won a crucial match against CSK. This win helped RCB qualify for the playoffs and knocked CSK out! Yash Dayal defended 16 runs in the final over, a heroic effort.
In 2025, RCB won all their games against CSK. They even won at CSK's home ground, Chepauk, for the first time in 17 years! Yash Dayal again defended runs in the last over in a match at Chinnaswamy.
The winning streak continued in 2026. RCB scored a massive 250 runs against CSK, with Tim David hitting 70 runs quickly. RCB won that match by 43 runs. As of April 2026, CSK has won 21 matches, and RCB has won 14, with one draw.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs. Hyderabad Teams
RCB also has a big rivalry with the Hyderabad teams. First, it was with the Deccan Chargers, and now with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Chargers won more games against RCB. The Sunrisers currently lead with 14 wins to RCB's 12.
These Hyderabad teams have often stopped RCB from winning titles. The Chargers beat RCB in the 2009 final. The Sunrisers beat them in the 2016 final. In 2020, Sunrisers knocked RCB out of the playoffs.
In 2024, the Sunrisers Hyderabad broke RCB's long-standing record for the highest IPL score. They scored 287 runs against RCB on RCB's home ground! This was thanks to amazing batting by Travis Head and Heinrich Klassen. Even with great efforts from Dinesh Karthik and Faf du Plessis, RCB lost that high-scoring game.
Kit Evolution
Regular Kits
RCB's main colors are red, black, and gold. In 2024, a bold blue color was added to the jersey, but it was not used in later seasons.

Go Green Kits
Since 2011, RCB has a special tradition. Once every season, they wear green jerseys for their "#GameForGreen" matches. This is to support environmental causes and encourage planting more trees. These green kits are made from recycled materials. In 2021, they also wore sky-blue kits to honor frontline workers.
