Sunil Philip Narine (born 26 May 1988) is a cricket player from Trinidad and Tobago. He played for the West Indies on the international stage. Sunil is mainly known as an off-spin bowler. This means he bowls with a special spinning action. He also bats left-handed.
Sunil played his first international One Day International (ODI) match in December 2011. He then made his Test match debut in June 2012. He was part of the West Indies team that won the 2012 T20 World Cup. In that final game, he took the winning wicket. In November 2023, Sunil announced he would no longer play international cricket.
Sunil's Cricket Journey
Sunil Narine started his first-class cricket career in February 2009. He played for the Trinidad and Tobago team. His first match was in the Regional Four Day Competition. He didn't take any wickets in that first game.
About a year later, he played another first-class match. He took two wickets in the second part of that game. In January 2011, Sunil played his first Twenty20 (T20) match. This was during the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament. Trinidad and Tobago won this competition. Sunil took five wickets during the tournament.
Winning the Caribbean Twenty20 meant Trinidad and Tobago could play in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20. This tournament happened in September and October. Sunil was one of the top bowlers there, taking ten or more wickets. He played his first List A cricket match in October 2011. He took one wicket in that game. Trinidad and Tobago also won this competition. Sunil was the best wicket-taker with 15 wickets.
Sunil Narine holds a record in the Champions League T20. He has taken the most wickets ever in that competition, with 39 wickets. In February 2012, the Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for a lot of money. He joined them to play in the 2012 Indian Premier League.
In May 2018, Sunil was chosen as a top player for the Global T20 Canada tournament. He played for the Montreal Tigers team. In the 2018 Indian Premier League, he was named the most valuable player. This was his second time winning this award.
In March 2019, Sunil played his 100th match in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In July 2020, he joined the Trinbago Knight Riders for the 2020 Caribbean Premier League. In February 2021, he played his 100th List A match.
In April 2022, the Oval Invincibles bought him for The Hundred tournament in England. On March 29, 2024, Sunil played his 500th T20 match. He was only the fourth player ever to reach this milestone. He was also the first spin bowler and the first player from his team, KKR, to do so.
On April 16, 2024, Sunil scored his first century (100 runs) in the IPL. He scored 109 runs from just 56 balls for the Kolkata Knight Riders. This was against the Rajasthan Royals. In IPL 2024, he won the MVP award for the third time. This is the most times any player has won it. His great performance helped KKR win their third title.
Playing for West Indies
Sunil Narine was chosen to play for the West Indies team in India in 2011. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut on December 6. He took two important wickets in that game. These wickets helped the West Indies win the match. He played in two more matches but took only one more wicket.
In February 2012, Sunil played well in the Regional Four Day Competition. He took 31 wickets and was his team's best bowler. Later, Australia visited the West Indies for five ODI matches. Sunil and another bowler, Kemar Roach, both took eleven wickets. The series ended in a tie.
Sunil was then picked for the West Indies Test team in June 2012. This happened after another player got injured. He made his Test debut on June 10, 2012. He had only played six first-class matches before this.
On July 16, 2012, Sunil had an amazing performance. He took five wickets for only 28 runs. This helped the West Indies beat New Zealand. He was named the Man of the Match in only his second Test game. He took eight wickets in that match.
By March 2014, Sunil was ranked the number one Twenty20 bowler in the world. He had a very high score of 784 points. He is also the only bowler to have bowled a "maiden" in a Super Over in a T20 match. A maiden over means no runs are scored off the bowler.
Sunil's Unique Bowling Style
Sunil Narine is known as a "mystery bowler." This is because he has many different ways to bowl his off breaks. He is very good at hiding which type of ball he will bowl. However, his bowling action has been checked several times. This is because sometimes his arm might bend too much when he bowls.
In 2014, he was not allowed to play in a final match. This was because his arm bent more than 15 degrees, which is against the rules. In November 2015, he was stopped from bowling in international cricket. His action was checked during a game against Sri Lanka. But in April 2016, he was cleared to bowl again.
Sunil's bowling action was checked again in 2018 during the 2018 Pakistan Super League. He was cleared soon after. In 2020, it was checked one more time during the 2020 Indian Premier League. The IPL committee later said his action was fine.
