Yuzvendra Chahal (born on July 23, 1990) is a talented Indian cricket player. He is known for his leg spin bowling in international matches for the India national cricket team. He plays in white-ball cricket, which includes One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Chahal also plays for the Haryana cricket team in India. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he plays for the Punjab Kings. He has also played for English teams like Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in the County Championship.
Yuzvendra Chahal holds a special record. He was the first Indian player to take 6 wickets in a Twenty20 International match. He was also the first player to be named "Man of the Match" after coming into a game as a concussion substitute. Before becoming a famous cricketer, Chahal was a chess player and even represented India internationally. He was part of the Indian team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Cricket Career Highlights
Playing in Domestic Leagues
Chahal started his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2011. He played only one IPL game for them but was important in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20. In the final, he took 2 wickets for just 9 runs, helping Mumbai Indians win the title.
In 2014, Royal Challengers Bangalore signed him. He quickly showed his skills, earning the "Man of the Match" award in a game against Delhi Daredevils. He continued to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore until 2021.
Joining Rajasthan Royals
In 2022, Rajasthan Royals bought Chahal in the IPL auction. On April 18, 2022, he achieved a hat-trick and took five wickets in an IPL match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. This was a big moment in his career.
In 2023, Chahal became the first Indian player to take 300 wickets in T20 matches. This happened during Rajasthan Royals' first match of the 2023 IPL season. In April 2024, he made history again by becoming the first bowler in IPL history to take 200 career wickets.
Playing for English Clubs
In September 2023, Chahal played for Kent County Cricket Club in England. He joined them for the last three matches of the 2023 County Championship season. In August 2024, he signed a short contract with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. In his first game for Northamptonshire, he took 5 wickets for only 14 runs.
International Cricket Journey
Chahal was chosen to play for India in 2016. He made his first One Day International (ODI) appearance against Zimbabwe on June 11, 2016. In his second ODI match, he took three wickets for 26 runs, helping India win. This performance earned him his first international "Man of the Match" award.
He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against Zimbabwe on June 18, 2016.
Memorable Bowling Performances
On February 1, 2017, Chahal became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in T20Is. He finished with amazing figures of 6 wickets for 25 runs against England. This was also the best bowling performance by a leg-spinner in T20I history at that time. He took the most wickets (23) in T20Is in 2017.
On January 18, 2019, Chahal took his second five-wicket haul in ODIs. He took 6 wickets for 42 runs against Australia. These were some of the best figures by an Indian bowler against Australia.
World Cup and Other Achievements
In April 2019, Chahal was selected for India's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He took 12 wickets during the tournament. In November 2019, he became the third Indian bowler to take 50 wickets in T20Is.
In December 2020, Chahal made history again. He came into a T20I match against Australia as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja. Chahal then won the "Man of the Match" award, becoming the first concussion substitute to do so in an international cricket game. In February 2022, he took his 100th wicket in ODI cricket during a match against the West Indies.
In May 2024, he was named in India’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament.
IPL Career
Yuzvendra Chahal has played for several teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). From 2011 to 2013, he played for Mumbai Indians. He then moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he played from 2014 to 2021. He was part of the team that reached the 2016 IPL final.
In 2022, he joined Rajasthan Royals and played in the 2022 IPL final. In 2024, he became the first bowler to take 200 wickets in the IPL. In April 2025, playing for the Punjab Kings, he took 4 wickets for 28 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders. This helped his team defend a low score of 111 runs, which was the lowest IPL total ever defended. He won the "Player of the Match" award for this great performance.
Chess Background
Yuzvendra Chahal is unique because he is the only person to have represented India in both chess and cricket. He played chess at the World Youth Chess Championship. He later stopped playing chess professionally because he found it hard to get a sponsor. He is still listed on the World Chess Federation's official website.
Personal Life
Chahal married Dhanashree Verma, who is a dance choreographer and a popular YouTuber. They got married in December 2020. The couple divorced in March 2025.
