Yuzvendra Chahal, born on July 23, 1990, is a famous Indian cricketer. He plays for the Indian team in shorter cricket games, where he bowls with a special style called leg spin. He also plays for the Haryana team in India and for the Rajasthan Royals in the exciting Indian Premier League (IPL). Sometimes, he plays for Northamptonshire in England.
Yuzvendra was the first Indian bowler to take 6 wickets in a Twenty20 International (T20I) match, which is a huge achievement! He also made history as the first player to win 'Man of the Match' after coming into a game as a concussion substitute. Did you know he used to be a chess player? He even represented India in chess! He was part of the Indian team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup, even though he didn't play in any matches.

Playing for Teams in India
Yuzvendra Chahal started his journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Mumbai Indians in 2011. He played only one IPL game for them but was important in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20. In the final match, he took 2 wickets for just 9 runs, helping Mumbai Indians win the title.
In 2014, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bought him for ₹ 10 lakh. He quickly became a key player for them. He even won the 'Man of the Match' award against Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2014.
Later, in 2022, the Rajasthan Royals bought him for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament. On April 18, 2022, he achieved something amazing against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He took a hat-trick (three wickets in three balls) and a five-wicket haul (five wickets in one match)! In 2023, he became the first Indian bowler to take 300 wickets in T20 matches.
In April 2024, Chahal made history again by becoming the first player in the IPL to take 200 career wickets.
Playing for Teams in England
In September 2023, Chahal played for an English team called Kent County Cricket Club. He joined them for the last three matches of the 2023 County Championship season.
In August 2024, he signed a short contract with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. In his very first game for them, he took 5 wickets for only 14 runs against his old team, Kent!
Playing for India
Yuzvendra Chahal was chosen to play for the Indian team in 2016. His first One Day International (ODI) match was against Zimbabwe on June 11, 2016. He took his first ODI wicket in that game.
In his second ODI match, he took three wickets for just 26 runs, helping India win easily. He even won his first international 'Man of the Match' award for his great bowling!
He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against Zimbabwe on June 18, 2016.
Big Achievements in T20Is
On February 1, 2017, Yuzvendra became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in T20Is. He finished with amazing figures of 6 wickets for just 25 runs against England. This was also the best bowling performance by any leg-spinner in T20I history at that time.
He took the most wickets (23) in T20Is in 2017 compared to any other bowler in the world.
ODI Milestones
On January 18, 2019, Chahal took his second five-wicket haul in ODIs, taking 6 wickets for 42 runs against Australia. These were some of the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler against Australia. They were also the best figures by an Indian spinner at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia.
In April 2019, he was selected for India's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He took 12 wickets during the tournament. In November 2019, he reached 50 wickets in T20Is, becoming the third Indian bowler to do so.
On December 4, 2020, during a T20I match against Australia, Chahal came into the game as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja. He then won the 'Man of the Match' award, becoming the first concussion substitute in international cricket to achieve this!
In February 2022, in a match against the West Indies, Chahal took his 100th wicket in ODI cricket, which is a big milestone for any bowler.
In May 2024, he was named in India’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament.
Chess Career
Yuzvendra Chahal is unique because he is the only person to have represented India in both chess and cricket! He played chess for India at the World Youth Chess Championship. He later stopped playing chess professionally because it was hard to find sponsors.
He is listed on the World Chess Federation's official website. As of June 2024, his chess rating shows he was ranked 1,833rd in India, 18,321st in Asia, and 82,387th in the world.
Personal Life
Yuzvendra Chahal married Dhanashree Verma in December 2020. Dhanashree is a dance choreographer and a popular YouTuber.
